Phlebotomist Training Lead

We are seeking an enthusiastic  and experienced Phlebotomist to work as part of our team as a Training Lead.

This post is primarily based within Derriford Hospital Out Patients Department and the new Dartmoor Building , but the post holder will be part of a team providing a valuable support function for the entire hospital collecting blood samples from Inpatients.

Applicants must have a basic general education and  excellent knowledge of phlebotomy, excellent communication skills, be able to deal with patients and staff with tact and diplomacy, experience of delivering phlebotomy training, and the ability to work under pressure and at pace to see large volumes of routine and complex patients.

The hours of work can be discussed but core working hours are 6am to 5:30pm Monday to Friday, with weekend and Bank Holiday working required at times, there will be an expectation to participate in offer a 7 day service which can be between the hours of 6am and 6pm.

  1. Responsible for the effective supervision of all processes in the positive identification of patients, the venepuncture and the collection/delivery of samples to the Pathology departments.
  2. To supervise, mentor and support Assistant Technical Officers working within the Phlebotomy service.
  3. To collect specimens of blood from PHNT inpatients and patients attending two outpatient departments, including Oncology.
  4. To ensure samples and request forms match with the patient and are labelled correctly for delivery to the Pathology Directorate.

Knowledge

  • Demonstrable experience as a phlebotomist.
  • Ability to appraise and manage staff in a very busy section.
  • Demonstrable supervisory experience.
  • Proven knowledge of Health & Safety issues.
  • Understanding of need for patient confidentiality

  • Knowledge of all relevant Health & Safety legislation and its application to the Section
