Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for  a podiatrist to join our team to provide leadership for the specialist nail surgery service for podiatry patients across Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust (TSDFT).

 We are looking for dynamic, enthusiastic and highly motivated individual to work at Band 6 to provide clinical leadership for all staff, thus ensuring standards of clinical expertise and excellence in podiatric nail surgery are continually maintained and improved.

Main duties of the job

You will provide professional clinical leadership for all staff, thus ensuring standards of clinical expertise and excellence in podiatric nail surgery are continually maintained and improved.

Be responsible for the management of a caseload of patients, providing a comprehensive range of specialist podiatric interventions to include nail surgery, wound care and providing other therapeutic interventions.

To be a mentor for students on placement from Plymouth University and to assist the student placement coordinator. 

Provide education to empower patients, carers and other health professionals in the management of the foot conditions.

To liaise with both Primary and Secondary Care professionals in ensuring seamless delivery of care to the nail surgery patient.

To be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation of podiatric care to a variety of patients with a wide range of clinical needs e.g. High-risk diabetics, vascular problems, chronic disease, wound management. 

To refer for appropriate diagnostic tests and input as per IRMER guidelines

To provide podiatry services in a variety of clinical settings and, including hospitals, health centres, clinics and domiciliary settings.

The Podiatry Department works from 11 different locations across the Torbay and South Devon Area and consists of 45 clinical staff comprising of Head of Service, Team Leads, Specialist podiatrists, podiatrists, assistant practitioners and clinical support staff .  We also have 10 administrative staff.

We aim to innovatively deliver first class lower limb and foot health preventative care across South Devon.   We strive to achieve better outcomes for our patients  whilst we also actively promote development opportunities for our staff.

Torbay Hospital provides acute care for the local community and has several community hospitals, and is a hot-spot for those who are considering living by the sea or within half an hour of Dartmoor National Park and an hour to Exmoor National Park.
 
Meanwhile, Plymouth and Exeter are also both within a short drive to enjoy the culture, maritime history and shopping experiences.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide leadership for the specialist nail surgery service for podiatry patients across Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust (TSDFT).

To ensure effective communication with patients, relatives and carers concerning assessment outcomes, treatment options and prognosis where there may be barriers to understanding due to learning difficulties, illness and high anxiety.

To liaise with both Primary and Secondary Care professionals in ensuring seamless delivery of care to the high risk and active foot patient. 

Delegate effectively and provide care plans for support staff such as clinical support workers assistant practitioners and students to follow

To maintain Registration with Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC) and degree/diploma in Podiatry and local analgesia administration certificate

To follow departmental Policies, Procedures and Guidelines but have the discretion to make own clinical diagnosis and decisions within professional boundaries

To attend all mandatory training sessions as required by the Trust

Maintain accurate clinical records of all patient consultations and related work carried out at each clinical session in accordance with Professional Standards and Trust policy.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Registered Podiatrist with Health and Care Professions Council
  • • Certificate in administration of local anaesthetic
  • • Mentorship qualification
Desirable criteria
  • • Prescribing qualification either independent or supplementary
  • • IRMER Certificate

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • Proven relevant post graduate experience in the NHS
  • • Specialist knowledge and experience in nail surgery
  • • Experience of protocol and guideline development and implementation
  • • Knowledge of developing, auditing, monitoring and evaluating protocols/guidelines and procedures
Desirable criteria
  • • Knowledge of departmental and Trust policies, procedures and guidelines
  • • Involvement in route cause analysis Investigations relating to clinical matters
  • • Evidence of supporting research activity

Skills

Essential criteria
  • • Ability to clearly understand own scope of practice
  • • Ability to work in a team
  • • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
  • • Ability to provide day to day supervision and delegation to Clinical support workers and Assistant practitioners
  • • Ability to produce training packages on nail surgery for departmental staff and other health care professionals
