Job overview

As a Consultant Radiographer, you will work alongside Consultant Radiologists and Specialist Doctors to deliver expert clinical care across one-stop symptomatic clinics, screening assessment clinics, and multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings. You will independently perform and report advanced breast imaging and interventional procedures, including ultrasound-guided and stereotactic biopsies, localisation techniques and mammogram reading.

This role carries significant clinical autonomy and leadership responsibility, including:

  • Acting as a Responsible Assessor for the NHS Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP)
  • Leading MDT discussions and presenting complex cases
  • Supervising trainees and advanced practitioners
  • Driving research, audit, and service development initiatives
  • Contributing to strategic decisions and clinical governance

What We’re Looking For

We are seeking an experienced, forward-thinking professional with:

  • A Master’s Degree in Breast Imaging and HCPC registration
  • Extensive experience in breast ultrasound, interventional procedures and film reading
  • Proven ability to lead, teach and innovate within a multidisciplinary team
  • A passion for patient-centred care and continuous improvement

Desirable attributes include formal teaching qualifications, experience in clinical research and previous leadership roles within breast imaging services.

University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust is seeking a dynamic and highly skilled Consultant Radiographer to join our Breast Services team within the Women’s and Children’s Care Group. Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Master’s Degree in Breast Imaging (to include Interpretation and reporting in mammography, Clinical examination and client communication, Breast ultrasound, Interventional procedures and Research)
  • • Master’s Degree in Breast Imaging (to include Interpretation and reporting in mammography, Clinical examination and client communication, Breast ultrasound, Interventional procedures and Research)
  • • Certificate of Competence in Mammography
  • • State-registered with Health Care Professions Council
Desirable criteria
  • • Formal teaching qualification
  • • Formal IT qualification

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • Demonstrable experience as a Film-reading Radiographer
  • • Knowledge, experience and understanding of the NHS Breast Screening Programme Quality Assurance Guidelines
  • • Demonstrable participation in self-audit and reflection on personal film-reader performance
  • • Demonstrable experience of breast ultrasound, vacuum procedures, digital breast tomosynthesis and pre-operative localisation techniques
Desirable criteria
  • • Undertaken a similar role in a breast unit
  • • Qualified to be a Responsible Assessor in NHSBSP Guidance.
  • • Demonstrable experience of breast contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM)

Research

Essential criteria
  • • Ability to apply evidence-based approach to management of clinical problems.
  • • Evidence of completed audit projects.
  • • Good current knowledge of breast literature.
  • • Up-to-date Continuous Professional Development (CPD).
Desirable criteria
  • • Completion of clinical research.
  • • Publications in peer reviewed journals.
  • • Ability to lead research team and originate research ideas.
  • • Previous success in grant applications to national funding bodies.

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • • Ability to teach clinical and practical skills.
  • • Willing to teach both medical and radiographic trainees.
  • • Good fundamental knowledge with good communication skills for teaching.
Desirable criteria
  • • Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates and postgraduates.
  • • Formal teaching qualification.
  • • Extensive teaching database or resources.
