Paediatric Consultant Anaesthetist

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Job overview

We are looking to welcome a Consultant Anaesthetist to our large, cohesive and forward-looking department.

This is a new post in the Paediatric Anaesthetic Group. Applicants are strongly recommended to contact the paediatric anaesthetic lead – Dr Laurence Hulatt - to find out more about paediatric anaesthesia in the Trust.

We are the largest hospital in the Southwest Peninsula.  Almost all adult surgical specialties are catered for and we are the regional hub for children’s surgery in the Peninsula, working closely with our specialist centre in Bristol.  We have a dedicated children’s theatre unit, with an exciting build underway to create new admission / recovery space to support three paediatric operating theatres. The infrastructure for children requiring surgery or critical care includes a four bed children’s HDU and dedicated paediatric ED.

The successful applicant will join a welcoming and friendly department that has held ACSA Accreditation since 2015 and is proud of its collegiate spirit.  We have a strong track record in clinical excellence and receive very strong feedback from our rotating trainees. We understand the need to accommodate a healthy work-life balance and aim to support flexible working.  We have a lively social programme and a dedicated anaesthetic coffee room, known as the “Back Bar”.

We are located on the Devon/Cornwall border with access to all the amenities of a metropolitan city, yet moments away from the sea and moor.

Main duties of the job

This post is for a substantive consultant anaesthetist within the paediatric anaesthetic group.  They will be responsible for the delivery of high quality anaesthesia for both children and adults.  The job plan will include regular fixed paediatric anaesthetic sessions as well as planned flexible sessions which will support paediatric or adult anaesthetic service delivery. The post holder will therefore be required to work flexibly to maintain generalist skills in anaesthesia practice and develop their clinical and non-clinical skills.

The applicant will join the paediatric anaesthetic on-call rota, which is currently of a 1 in 8 frequency.

The enclosed job plan is indicative and will change with the upcoming opening of the third paediatric theatre and/or to meet the requirements of the service and the interests of the post holder. The department runs on a bi-weekly ‘red’ (week 1) / ‘green’ (week 2) pattern for DCC.

Working for our organisation

The Anaesthesia Service Line comprises 64 consultants (7 military), 5 SAS doctors, and approximately 40 trainees. Although large, we have a reputation for being supportive and friendly. We deliver >20 000 PA of direct clinical care per annum in over 30 locations.

The paediatric anaesthetic group is a sub-specialist group within the wider department and provides elective paediatric anaesthetic sessions and staffs the 1:8 paediatric anaesthetic oncall rota. Paediatric anaesthetists also provide cover for adult anaesthetic sessions on a flexible basis.  There is a paediatric anaesthetic lead who coordinates the service and acts as liaison with the wider department and hospital.

We pride ourselves in being a progressive, fun, dedicated department, with monthly departmental business meetings, regular CPD sessions and a fantastic anaesthetic coffee room which enables the development of strong personal and professional bonds within the department. The anaesthetic department and Trust have a strong focus on staff wellbeing. Wellbeing issues are frequently discussed in CME and departmental business meetings to improve working lives of anaesthetists and ensure patient safety. The onsite Derriford Centre for Health and Wellbeing provides occupational health, fitness and leisure facilities.

Plymouth is described as Britain’s Ocean City, offering an excellent work-life balance and plenty of opportunity to make the most of the fantastic natural world on our doorstep.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We have included an indicative 10PA job plan within the candidate pack to give a flavour of a typical job plan.  The successful applicant will have the opportunity to meet with the paediatric anaesthetic lead and Service Line Director before commencing the post to agree a job plan that supports both the applicant’s interests and needs of the Trust. We recognise the importance of flexible working and will seek to accommodate this wherever possible.

The post is advertised with 1.5 generic SPA. The service line will support additional SPA, medical school activity and external duties to allow continued personal development, as well as development of the department and the wider NHS.
