An exciting opportunity has become available in our busy Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic and Sarcoma surgery unit for a period of 6 months with a potential possibility of extension at StR Higher level.

This is covering a vacancy within a formally recognised deanery training post. The successful candidate will be given the same training opportunities as those on a recognised training programme. 

 

Main duties of the job

This post provides an excellent opportunity for exposure to a large number of general surgery cases as well as subspeciality practice in HPB and Sarcoma surgery.

Depending on the level of experience of the candidate the role can accommodate the opportunity to be involved in major complex surgeries, but also refine technique in Laparoscopic upper GI surgery including cholecystectomy and bile duct exploration.

The successful candidate will participate in the standard work of the unit, including commitment to the general surgery on call rota in line with other middle grade doctors on the general surgical unit.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Some of the duties of the StR Higher are as follows:

  • Participate in the Theatre and ward care of Hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) and emergency surgery patients.
  • Participate in the Middle grade on-call rota.
  • Liaise with junior trainees to ensure appropriate pre-operative work-up including imaging.
  • Attend regular operating sessions of the clinical team to assist with major surgery and develop skills of increasing complexity under the close supervision of the Consultant.
  • Assist with regular outpatient clinics under the Consultant's guidance.
  • Undertake administrative duties including the dictation of discharge summaries, operating notes, outpatient clinic letters and other relevant clinical correspondence.
  • Perform duties in emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the Consultants.
  • Contribute to the teaching of medical students, and junior trainees.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & SPECIAL TRAINING

Essential criteria
  • MRCS or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • FRCS or equvalent
  • Interest in HPB

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • General Surgical experience
  • At least 1 year’s surgical experience at Specialist Registrar grade
  • Clinical Knowledge
Desirable criteria
  • General surgical experience
  • ATLS course
  • Experience of audit management
  • Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates
  • Experience of current assessment methods e.g., DOPS and case-based discussion Publications

APTITUDE & ABILITIES

Essential criteria
  • Ability to organise and manage outpatient priorities, surgical waiting lists and operating lists and rota
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, relatives, GPs nurses and other agencies
