Specialist Doctor in Medical Microbiology

We are seeking an enthusiastic and forward-thinking Specialist Doctor in Medical Microbiology, to join our dynamic and supportive team.

You will join an established consultant team with a wide range of specialist interests including:

  • Antimicrobial stewardship
  • Infective endocarditis
  • Staphylococcal bacteraemia
  • Orthopaedic infections
  • Haematology and neutropenic sepsis
  • Intensive care infection
  • Virology

This is an opportunity to work in a modern, progressive infection service delivering:

  • Comprehensive clinical microbiology, virology and mycology advice
  • 24/7 infection advisory service (1:7 non-resident on-call)
  • Embedded antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) across the Trust
  • Active involvement in Infection Prevention & Management (IPM)
  • Close working relationships with tertiary specialties including ICU, NICU, renal transplant, haematology, cardiothoracic surgery and neurosurgery

The post holder will practise autonomously providing complex clinical advice, supporting optimal diagnostic pathways, and promoting evidence-based antimicrobial prescribing.

Suitable candidates for this role would need to have Full GMC registration with Licence to Practice and working experience in an Infection Specialty (preferably in Medical Microbiology).

Less than full-time applicants will be considered, but full-time preferred.

Whilst the example job plan given is for a 10PA post, for those looking to work flexibly or LTFT the SPA allocation will remain the same as those looking to work 10PAs ie 1.5 generic SPA with up to another 1 PA for non-generic SPA as agreed with the service line director according to service line needs and the interests of the applicant. Applicants are encouraged to discuss this with service lead prior to application.

If the successful candidate wishes to work flexibly and this is agreed, the job plan will contain a minimum of 1.5 generic SPAs as long as the total PA allocation remains equal to or above 5 PAs.  Additional SPA time can be added depending on availability, the interests of the candidate and needs of the department or Trust.

Qualifications

  • FRCPath Part 1 (or equivalent
  • Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview)
  • Good knowledge of, and ability to use, spoken and written English

  • Experience with EPIC EPR
