Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Labour Coordinator to work as part of our midwifery team, based on the Labour Ward.

With strong leadership and excellent communication skills, you will be the expert resource to all staff providing essential clinical and managerial support in complex and sensitive situations. You will be responsible for supervising midwives and Maternity Support Workers in the clinical area. You will act up in the absence of the Inpatient Matron and will be given the opportunity to develop managerial skills by undertaking duties such as e-rostering, appraisal, audit and performance management as well as the day to day responsibility of the coordination of the unit.

The post-holder will report to the Maternity Matron for inpatient areas.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide holistic, high-quality, person-centred care in a range of settings. Experience through the service areas will be key to development and maintenance of competencies and to achieve progression.
  • To work autonomously within locally agreed policies and guidelines, taking account of NMC guidance in relation to practice.
  • To be responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation, and evaluation of programmes of care to families and their babies.
  • Lead the midwifery team and coordinate the unit across the 24-hour day, acting as a resource for clinical midwifery decision making and expert clinical advice.
  • Provide expert clinical advice to all medical and midwifery staff to improve outcomes for people accessing maternity care
  • Work closely with the Matrons, Head of Midwifery and Director of Maternity Services, to ensure robust governance within the Maternity Unit
  • Audit and evaluate the care of families and their babies across the maternity service.
  • To work innovatively within the NMC Code, making changes in practice in line with current evidence/best practice consensus

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable experience within a similar role
  • Good understanding of Risk Management and Complaints procedures
  • Up to date with the NHS Agenda, national directives, and all Governance aspects
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrable experience of staff development and performance management

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NMC Registered
  • Proven evidence of Continuing Professional Development
  • Mentorship qualification/ENB997/or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Proven evidence of continued appropriate studies
  • Leadership/management qualification
  • Neonatal examination of the newborn certificate or equivalent

Essential criteria
  • Good communication skills, written and verbal, with ability to demonstrate fluency, clarity and effectiveness at all levels
  • Effective influencing skills: in general, and with senior health care professionals
  • Involvement in development of evidence-based guidelines and in setting and maintaining standards of care
