Job overview

As a Network Neonatal Unit we are a progressive level 3 unit currently providing 7 intensive care, 10 high dependency/special care and 16 transitional care cot’s, serving the population of Devon and Cornwall. It is anticipated to expand following collaborative ODN agreement and publication of the National Neonatal Service Specification.

Our accomplished nursing establishment, ANNP team, designated medical staff, Outreach Service and tier of support staff facilitate the local ethos of delivering highly specialised care in partnership with parents. The Neonatal Transport Service, SoNar South is also located within the unit,  which provides an expert 24 hour retrieval service and gives QIS staff further opportunity to advance their clinical skills.

Main duties of the job

Responsible for the delivery of effective quality care in accordance with local, Service Line and Trust policies and guidelines with the support of the senior nursing team

Participate in Network NICU service development

Participate in evidence based practice and neonatal research 

Contribute to resource management in the provision of neonatal services

Engage in Clinical Governance initiatives within the Directorate

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical
1. Demonstrate a knowledge of clinical nursing practice by delivering evidenced based care
2. Manage a patient workload using clinical judgement and decision-making skills whilst maintaining 
safe standards 
3. Competent in the use of medical devices and responsible for the correct use of specialist equipment 
by the multidisciplinary team
4. Promote a positive and professional working environment 
5. Participate in clinical supervision 
6. Liaise with, and report to the multidisciplinary team in the provision of family centred care
7. Identify, manage and refer appropriately, infants requiring Safeguarding assessment
8. Encourage parents and carers to be actively involved in the planning and delivery of care to their infant 
9. Promote health education within the clinical area for families
10. Assist in the provision of family support and bereavement services
11. Assist with the discharge/ transfer process of infants to other care services
12. Where applicable, participate in the  Neonatal Transport Service- SoNar
13. Work in accordance with local policies and guidelines

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Clinical and practical skills
  • An awareness of research and proven evidence based practice in the clinical setting
Desirable criteria
  • Recent neonatal intensive care demonstrable experience

Qualifications

  • NMC Registration

  • Degree in Nursing
  • Recognised Qualification in Speciality course
