Job overview

University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHPNT) wishes to appoint a Trust grade Doctor help our current establishment of Neurophysiology scientists to meet the demands of an increasing in and outpatient workload and to contribute to the development of a forward thinking and ambitious department. Main duties of the job

The employer is University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, with the post description and responsibilities below being based on a whole-time appointment. The model job plan is based on a full-time appointment of 10 PAs. Trust policy is for job plans to be based on 8.5 DCC and 1.5 SPA, although up to one further SPA may be agreed within this during the job plan review process, depending on departmental and/or care group needs. The average maximum weekly programmed activities for direct clinical care will not exceed 8.5 PA unless by prior mutual agreement.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Neurophysiology department is part of the wider Medicine Care Group, situated within the Cluster of Neurology & Stroke, Neurophysiology and Neuropsychology. 

The Services provided include diagnostic testing on adults and children for the following conditions: 

EEG: epilepsy, genetic disorders, memory disorders, acute meningitis, encephalitis, status epilepticus, post neurosurgical procedures and in critical care. 

Prolonged EEG/video Telemetry & Ambulatory EEG studies: disorders of consciousness including epilepsy and complex epilepsy syndromes. 

EMG/NCS: neurological, neuromuscular, rheumatological disease and trauma 

Evoked Potentials: optic nerve disorders, spinal cord compression, congenital disorders, multiple sclerosis and other inflammatory conditions. 

Visual electrodiagnostics: genetic and acquired retinal disorders. 

Daytime and nocturnal sleep studies: narcolepsy, insomnia, hypersomnolence and parasomnias.

Education/ qualifcations

Essential criteria
  • To be registered , with the General Medical Council and hold a current Licence to Practice.
  • To have training relevant for working as a clinical neurophysiologist.
Desirable criteria
  • ALS and APLS training. Level 3 child protection training. Higher degree. Postgraduate prizes and awards. Other medical qualifications. Experience outside specialty.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate evidence of good general training. Attended appropriate basic specialty courses. Demonstratable evidence of good specialty training in neurophysiology. Evidence of ability to perform advanced neurophysiological procedures relevant to the post. Evidence of ability to lead a team.
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding of NHS. Good time management. Demonstrate evidence of wide based knowledge. Attended appropriate courses/meetings in the last 6 years covering the spectrum of the entire specialty. Comprehensive knowledge of Neurophysiology specialty. Attended appropriate courses, fellowships or equivalent. Attended advanced courses in neurophysiology. Comprehensive knowledge of neurophysiology Previous experience of working as a neurophysiology consultant

Research & clinical audit

Essential criteria
  • Presentations at local/regional/ national/international meetings. Publications and presentations in area of neurophysiology.
Desirable criteria
  • Presentations or publications in peer reviewed journals. Evidence of ability to conduct clinical audit. Evidence of a research interest and clinical audit Current research. Research in a specialty interest or trauma. Presentations at local/ regional/national/ international meetings. Demonstrate an enthusiasm to continue with research and clinical audit. Statistical knowledge.
