Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic and ambitious Clinical Psychologist to work within our Neuropsychology department. You will be joining our established Neuropsychology Service.  

This is an exciting and opportunity for a dynamic individual with developing expertise in Neuropsychology looking to develop their career in clinical neuropsychology.

Available as a fixed term contract or secondment opportunity. (With current line manager's agreement) for 12 months. 

 

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

Main duties of the job

To work with more senior clinical psychologists in providing a clinical neuropsychology service to adult patients with neurological, neurosurgical, or related psychological conditions. The role will include providing specialist neuropsychological assessment and treatment at the same time as offering advice and consultation on patients’ psychological care to non-psychologist colleagues and to other, non-professional carers. To work autonomously as an independent practitioner within defined aims and professional guidelines and the overall framework of the team’s policies and procedures. To participate in the development of services within Neurosciences, and in collaboration with services across the peninsula in relation to care pathways. To undertake clinical research and audit. To provide teaching, training and consultancy to clinical psychology and other colleagues.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical:   

1.  To undertake highly specialist neuropsychological and psychological assessments of neurosciences patients and to provide opinions to inform the medical diagnosis and care plan. These opinions involve the interpretation and integration of highly complex data from neuropsychological and psychological tests and underlying theoretical and therapeutic models, information from the patient and family, the current literature and with regard to other medical investigations such as neuro-imaging.

 

2.  To communicate these specialist opinions in the form of complex written and verbal reports.

 

3.  To feedback these specialist opinions to patients, families carers and other professionals when the information may be sensitive and contentious. It will be necessary at times, to provide opinions that conflict with other professionals and to communicate these views to individuals who may have difficulties in understanding, communication or who may be angry, highly anxious, hostile or manipulative.

 

4.  To make skilled judgments about treatment options and to provide specialist advice concerning management of a patient’s physical and psychological care. These opinions involve the interpretation of complex information obtained from psychological theoretical and therapeutic models, underlying evidence of treatment efficacy and factors concerning historical and developments processes that have shaped the individual, family or group.

 

5.  To provide specialist and complex psychological treatments and interventions for patients presenting with a wide range of psychological disorders.

 

6.  Under guidance from the senior clinical psychologists, to take professional responsibility for the assessment, treatment and discharge of clients and the planning and prioritisation of a dedicated caseload.

 

7.  To provide specialist neuropsychological and psychological consultation to other professionals in relation to patient assessment, diagnosis, treatment and care.

 

8.  To attend and participate in all relevant clinical and professional meetings.

 

9.  To plan and prioritise own workload in respect of clinical, research and other activities.

Experience and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • Proven doctoral level knowledge of Clinical Psychology, and corresponding high level of skills in assessment and treatment.
  • • Able to supervise assistant psychologists and undergraduate placement students.
  • • Able to undertake teaching and training of clinical psychologists and other professionals. • Highly developed communications abilities. • Able to undertake clinical and academic research. • Able to provide some consultancy to other professional and non-professional groups.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Professional registration - HCPC
  • • Honours degree in Psychology (main subject) 2.1 or above.
  • • Accredited postgraduate Doctoral level training in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy).
Desirable criteria
  • • Other related academic or other qualifications, or evidence of postgraduate training in Neuropsychology.
  • • Advanced keyboard and IT skills
