Job overview

There is an exciting opportunity to assist with managing the Nuclear Medicine department at the University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust. The post holder will assist with managing a team of Clinical Technologists, students and clerical staff in the day to day running of the Nuclear Medicine department. 

The Nuclear Medicine department at Derriford Hospital offers the broadest range of any department within the South-West. It is a tertiary referral centre for specialist examinations and performs approximately 6,500 examinations of 60 different types each year for both inpatients and outpatients. Research and development is also undertaken at local, national and international levels.

The department consists of 2 consultants, 12 technologists, 3 physicists and an administrative team.

The department carries out a wide range of imaging and non-imaging diagnostic studies as well as some therapy procedures. There is an integrated radiopharmacy for the manufacture of short-lived radiopharmaceuticals and dispensing of intravenous injections which operates under a MHRA specials licence.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

Main duties of the job

·        Assist the Chief Technologist to lead and manage the Clinical Technical Services and administrative work of the Nuclear Medicine Department.

·       Assist the Chief Technologist to manage a team of Clinical Technologists and Trainees.

·        Assist the Chief Technologist to manage a team of clerical staff; bookings clerks, receptions and secretaries

·       Assist the Chief technologist to manage the budget within the allocated resources by investigating, sourcing and ordering the most appropriate consumables and equipment.

·        Supervise and teach qualified technologists and trainees.

·   Manage and take responsibility for the day to day running of the clinical work in the department 

·  Manage and take responsibility for the scheduling of complex imaging and non-imaging investigations, liaising with external and internal clinical teams when required.

·        Assist the Chief Technologist in the recruitment of staff

·      Assist the Chief Technologist in the development of new procedures and protocols and the appropriate recording of these on the quality management system.

·        Deputise for the Chief Technologist when absent.

·       When required provide high quality clinical care while performing a range of diagnostic imaging and non-imaging investigations in Nuclear Medicine.

·      When required, manufacture, dispense and administer a wide range of radiopharmaceuticals under the same standards as Pharmacy for intravenous and oral administration.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will assist the Chief Technologist with the management of the Nuclear Medicine Department, the technologist team and the clerical team.

 

Key duties for the role are:

 

·       Taking responsibility for the day to day running of the department 

 

·       Producing the weekly technologist’s rota and amending camera availability accordingly

 

·       Teaching and assessing technologists and students

 

·       Taking responsibility for liaising with the bookings team re. routine and complex bookings

 

·       Taking responsibility for the generation and review of protocols and SOPS and other documentation critical to the delivery of the service. 

 

·       Assisting the Chief Technologist to ensure that all technologists are up to date with statutory training and competencies required for their job role

 

·       Assisting the Chief Technologist to ensure that all members of the clerical team are up to date with statutory training and competencies required for their job role

 

·        Assisting the Chief Technologist to ensure that all  appraisals are up to date, arranging appraisal dates, undertaking appraisals and formulating action plans in conjunction with the Chief Technologist

 

·       Assisting the Chief Technologist in managing and approving annual leave for technologists and clerical staff ensuring an adequate skill mix at all times

         

          Assisting the Chief Technologist in the evaluation, purchase and installation of equipment

 

·       Assist the Chief technologist to manage the budget within the allocated resources by investigating, sourcing and ordering the most appropriate consumables and equipment

Person specification

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Demonstrable experience in a wide range of Nuclear Medicine procedures some of which are complex and non-routine.
  • • Demonstrable experience in Radiopharmacy manufacturing and dispensing.
  • • Proven ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team and on own initiative.
Desirable criteria
  • • Teaching and mentoring.
  • • Demonstrable management experience.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • BSc in Clinical Technology, Radiography or equivalent.
  • • Post Graduate Certification in Nuclear Medicine or equivalent level of proven knowledge or demonstrable experience
  • • HPC Registration or Registered with RCT.

Aptitude & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • • Good interpersonal skills to work with staff from other professions.
  • • Good interpersonal skills to work with patients of all ages and backgrounds with a wide range of medical conditions. Confident and compassionate dealing with terminally ill patients, babies, very young children and their parents.
  • • Ability to prioritise workload, instruct and direct others.
