Job overview
The nephrology nurse specialist is an integral part of the multi disciplinary team, providing nursing expertise within the inpatient, outpatient, community and shared care setting in relation to the treatment, management and nursing care of children and families with kidney disease, as well as post renal transplant care.
***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be responsible for maintaining current professional registration and will ensure that practice is reflective of best practice guidelines. The post holder will act as a resource to all other professionals and work colleagues. They will be able to engage in flexible, partnership working to develop service provision.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Participate in delivering highly skilled care, information and advice in the outpatient, inpatient and home settings as well as ensuring that appropriate resources are available to assist in providing this care.
- Develop, implement and review clinical protocols and standard operating procedures which assist in delivering evidence based best practice.
- Develop expertise within the team ensuring the relevant clinical skills required for management of patients at home/off site.
- Provide teaching regarding the use of equipment and treatment regimes in home settings for patient, families and staff involved.
- Ensure concise and accurate documentation of patient interventions at home, including telephone advice and support are recorded.
- Review and develop current referral system to ensure efficiencies and effective communication.
- To run clinics for pre selected outpatient follow ups.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- NMC registration - child branch
- Assessing/Mentoring qualification
- Degree in nursing - child branch
Desirable criteria
- Non medical prescribing qualification or working towards
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Demonstrates proven knowledge of child protection and safeguarding procedures
- Inpatient tertiary nephrology nursing demonstrable experience
- Full driving licence and access to a car for work
Desirable criteria
- Demonstrable experience within a tertiary nephrology community nursing role including outpatient demonstrable experience
- Demonstrates proven evidence of clinical governance understanding
- Demonstrable experience of research and audits
Skills & Abilities
Essential criteria
- Excellent relevant paediatric clinical skills
- Skilled at manual blood pressure monitoring
- Self discipline and good time management
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Computer literate
- Demonstrable experience in managing peritoneal dialysis
Desirable criteria
- Independent venepuncture or willing to work towards
- Excellent teaching, training and preceptorship skills
