Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated HCPC-registered Radiographer to join our team as a Band 6 Senior Radiographer in Shockwave Lithotripsy and General X-ray.
We welcome applications from Radiographers with post-registration NHS experience and strong clinical knowledge and skills across general radiography. The successful applicant will join our senior imaging team and help deliver high-quality, patient-centred services across University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust.
The X-ray service encompasses Derriford Hospital, six peripheral sites and the new Community Diagnostic Centre. The post provides opportunities to develop experience in clinical leadership, staff development and service improvement.
Our on-site shockwave lithotripsy service provides specialist treatment for patients across the South West Peninsula. It is a multidisciplinary service led by radiographers and nurses, and continues to develop in response to increasing regional demand.
The postholder will support the Area Lead Radiographer in the safe and effective delivery of the shockwave lithotripsy service, while also maintaining and developing expertise within general X-ray. Specialist training in shockwave lithotripsy will be provided as required.
**Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.**
Main duties of the job
The postholder will deliver a safe, effective and efficient radiographic service in line with professional and departmental standards.
They will work across general X-ray and shockwave lithotripsy, undertaking duties appropriate to a Band 6 Senior Radiographer. They will develop the specialist knowledge and competence required to support the safe delivery and day-to-day coordination of the lithotripsy service within their scope of practice and departmental protocols. They will work closely with the Area Lead Radiographer and multidisciplinary stone team to provide a responsive, patient-centred regional service.
Within general X-ray, the postholder will maintain a high level of clinical competence and provide senior support at Derriford Hospital and peripheral imaging sites.
They will contribute to clinical leadership, service improvement, quality assurance, and the development of departmental policies and working practices. They will also supervise, assess and support students, apprentices and less experienced colleagues.
The postholder will participate in an Agenda for Change-compliant 24-hour, seven-day roster, including weekends and bank holidays, and rotate to peripheral sites according to service need.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Contribute to the day-to-day coordination and delivery of the shockwave lithotripsy and general X-ray services, planning, organising and prioritising clinical activity to provide a safe, effective and patient-centred service.
Undertake specialist clinical duties within the shockwave lithotripsy service following completion of the required training and competency assessments. This will include reviewing relevant clinical information and previous imaging, undertaking pre-treatment imaging where appropriate, localising urinary calculi using fluoroscopy and ultrasound, delivering treatment and monitoring the patient and treatment response.
Accurately document the treatment undertaken, including treatment parameters, imaging findings and the apparent response of the calculus to treatment.
Work closely with lithotripsy nurses, urologists, radiologists and other members of the multidisciplinary stone team to support effective patient pathways, including planned and urgent referrals.
Support the Area Lead Radiographer in the planning, coordination, development and evaluation of the lithotripsy service. Provide delegated operational leadership and deputise for the Area Lead Radiographer when appropriate.
Maintain a high level of clinical competence within general X-ray and undertake duties commensurate with a Band 6 Senior Radiographer. Support the day-to-day operation of the service, including the supervision of junior staff and the prioritisation of planned and emergency workloads.
Respond flexibly to changing clinical and operational demands, using professional judgement to identify and resolve problems and escalating concerns appropriately.
Work in accordance with relevant legislation, professional standards, Trust policies, departmental procedures and agreed clinical protocols, including local radiation safety procedures and the requirements of IR(ME)R.
Be responsible for the safe use of specialist imaging and lithotripsy equipment. Undertake relevant quality assurance checks and ensure equipment faults are reported, escalated and followed up appropriately.
Contribute to clinical governance, quality assurance, audit, service evaluation and improvement activity across the lithotripsy and general X-ray services.
Support the education and development of radiographers, assistant practitioners, apprentices, students and other learners through clinical supervision, teaching, competency assessment and feedback.
Participate in the Agenda for Change-compliant 24-hour, seven-day general X-ray roster, including weekends and bank/public holidays, and rotate to peripheral imaging sites according to service requirements.

Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Demonstratable postgraduate experience as a general radiographer and sound clinical proven knowledge of radiography.
- Proven ability to demonstrate an understanding of evidence-based practice.
- Proven knowledge and demonstrable experience of mentorship or practice assessment, education and development.
- Proven awareness of NHS policies and documents.
Desirable criteria
- Demonstrable experience of planning and organising complex activities requiring the formulation and adjustment of plans.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Current HCPC registration
- BSc in Diagnostic Radiography or equivalent.
