Job overview

University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust are recruiting for a Rotational Band 5 Dietitian.    

This post would suit either student dietitians or experienced Band 5 dietitians. There is an option to start as a band 3/4 whilst you wait for your HCPC registration. 

Rotational dietitians work within the acute and community dietetic teams. Rotations will provide the opportunity to work within a wide range of specialties including community, oncology, gastroenterology, paediatrics, renal and the newly created major trauma ward. 

Band 5 dietitians will work closely within an established dietetic team and work in collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams including doctors, nurses, caterers and therapists to deliver dietetic care to patients.

The successful applicants will be required to develop and take part in staff teaching, student training and support the team in audit and service developments. 

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

Main duties of the job

  • To provide a dietetic service to an allocated workload of inpatients and outpatients at Derriford Hospital and Community sites and maintain accurate records under the supervision of a senior dietitian.
  • To participate in the teaching and training of other health care professionals.
  • To be involved in all Nutrition and Dietetic departmental activities and contribute to the delivery of a Trust wide dietetic service

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Provide a high standard of dietetic service to patients through comprehensive assessment, planning, and monitoring of patient requirements using evidence-based practice.
  • Work effectively as an individual and/or as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Communicate accurately in writing and/or verbally with other health professionals.  Record all assessments and interventions in clinical notes, nursing notes and dietetic record cards in line with BDA guidelines.
  • Adapt to changing demands of the job to provide a dietetic service in the absence of co-workers.
  • Develop and apply knowledge in specialist areas, under the supervision of a senior dietitian.
  • Provide regular outpatient clinics.   
  • Review and update resource material using evidence based information.
  • Ensure that resources are used effectively and in accordance with departmental guidelines.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations and training programmes to patients and healthcare professionals using current evidence-based resources.
  • Participate in education and training of student dietitians with clinical supervisory skills training.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to continuing professional development to improve patient centred care.
  • Participate in audits and quality monitoring.
  • Proactively contribute to the achievement of clinical outcomes through individual and team effort.
  • Be aware of and adhere to all trust policies and procedures, the Health & Safety at Work Act and Data Protection Act.
  • Liaises with food services department to ensure correct provision of therapeutic diets to inpatients on assigned ward

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc in Human Nutrition and Dietetics
  • HCPC Professional registration
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching certificate
  • IT certificate
  • Counselling skills training

Knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Proven knowledge of anthropometry, biochemistry, pharmacology to undertake a full nutrition assessment
  • Competence in calculating basic nutritional requirements
  • Competence to practice in a basic range of clinical conditions
Desirable criteria
  • Previous NHS experience across a variety of dietetic specialties
  • Demonstrable experience in audits, research and CPD

Aptitude and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Good communication skills, written and verbal with the ability to share complex clinical information at an appropriate level
  • Ability to manage a defined clinical caseload with a degree of supervision
  • Ability to prioritise and manage time effectively
Desirable criteria
  • Attention to detail
  • Demonstrable experience supervising students and dietetic assistants
