Vascular Access Clinical Support Worker

Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a specialist team providing vascular access to the trust. The post holder will be responsible for providing a high quality holistic service for patients who require vascular access trust wide.
You will be required to work a combination of weekday shifts, ensuring a smooth patient pathway from referral, insertion and training of patients (when applicable) to discharge.

Main duties of the job

  • Prioritising and scheduling of patients from in-patient wards, day case waiting list and outpatient referrals.
  • Expert practice in ultrasound guided venepuncture, insertion of cannulas, management of vascular access device associated complications.
  • Promoting clinical excellence in vascular access device care and acting as support for other healthcare professionals.
  • Staff education and assessment in the care and maintenance of vascular access devices.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

·         Responsible for the delivery of excellent clinical care within the vascular access team in close collaboration with the non-registered and registered nursing team and medical teams.

·         Receive and process referrals, requiring a reasonable depth of knowledge around vascular access and vessel health preservation to safely and effectively prioritise patient bookings into vascular access clinic lists.

·         Pre-assess patients vascular access requirements, support patients who attend for PICC insertion and those who may present with treatment related complications.

·         Effectively use ultrasound to take bloods and cannulate patients with challenging vascular access.

·         Participate in infection control audits of PICCs and weekly surveillance of inpatients with PICCs.

·         Participate in the delivery of staff educational programmes to improve knowledge and safety of central venous access devices.

Qualifications and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • NVQ3/equivalent or higher
  • • Up to date Venepuncture & cannulation
  • • Vital signs and observational skills
  • • Knowledge of vascular access devices, complications and vessel health preservation.
  • • Proficient with IT systems
Desirable criteria
  • • Knowledge of the principles of ultrasound related to vascular access in the upper limbs.
  • • Practical ultrasound skills for venepuncture and cannulation.
  • • Co-ordinator role within a healthcare setting
