Job overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated candidate to join our Consultant team for a 3 month initial contract, extending to a 1 year fixed term locum in Radiology, specialist interests can be potentially accommodated depending on speciality.

This locum post will join 25 existing Consultant Radiologists. The service provides diagnostic imaging services to Primary Care and all Trust Specialities with imaging provided at Torbay DGH, in Community sites and at a Community Diagnostic Centre. The role includes provision of on-call supported by Radiology Registrars.

This post is offered on a full-time basis and is available as soon as possible. You will be contracted to 10 programmed activities per week.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate professional excellence and ability to deliver effective care. Previous experience working in the NHS is required.

Main duties of the job

Patient safety, dignity and care are the highest priority and at the centre of all that we do. In support of this, the specific duties for the Consultant Radiologist role include:

  • Providing high quality Diagnostic clinical reports, advice and opinion on all patient types from all referrers into the service.
  • To be proactive in supporting pathways which ensure that all patients receive rapid assessment, treatment and clinical decision making, whilst ensuring our standard to deliver safe quality and performance are delivered and sustained.
  • Consultant delivered care to patients, including clinical leadership and supervision of junior medical staff, ensuring the highest standards of clinical care are provided to all patients attending the hospital for diagnostics and radiology procedures.
  • To provide teaching and training at undergraduate and postgraduate level and supervise and train the juniors and specialty doctors.
  • Abiding by the clinical and corporate governance policies of the Trust

The Radiology department at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust (TSDFT) is a dynamic department known for taking a proactive role in service development, quality improvement, and education and training.

 We are part of the Peninsula Radiology Network (PenRad) with the Devon and Cornwall Radiology Services collaborating effectively to develop systems that benefit our patients care and provide excellent systems of work and opportunities for our teams.

 The Radiology service is based at Torbay Hospital where all main diagnostic modalities are on site.

The Consultant team is supportive and highly collaborative; there are regular Consultant team meetings for updates and planning. The team is flexible in accommodating the interests of new colleagues.

 Torbay Hospital offers a range of opportunities for new consultants to be involved in QI, service development, IT projects, research and in education and training. There is excellent practical, administrative and management support for roles in these areas.

Torbay Radiology is well known as a nurturing and supportive department for medical colleagues and for doctors in training. We work with and supervise trainees who are part of the Radiology training programme based at the Radiology Academy in Plymouth and are regularly involved in activities supporting Medical Students.

 The Consultant team are an integral part of MDT meetings for specialities within the Trust and for pathways spanning multiple sites.

  • Abiding by the clinical and corporate governance policies of the Trust by:
    • Being proactive in the Department’s clinical governance agenda,
    • Demonstrating active participation in the regular Radiology Quality Improvement meeting.
    • Taking on leadership roles to support continuous learning and improvement, thereby
    • To liaise with clinicians and managers within and outside the Department to address any issues arising that may affect the services.
    • To participate in relevant audit and quality assurance processes.

Other Responsibilities

  • Junior staff: Supervision of Radiology Registrars and Medical Students based on site.
  • Budget: Cooperate with the Deputy Medical Director and Divisional General Manager on budgetary issues.
  • Communication: This will include the responsibility for and arrangement of communication and liaison with all other medical and service departments within the Trust and other Trusts.
  • Teaching: To have an active role in Radiology Trainee programme.

Essential criteria
  • Ability to offer expert clinical and diagnostic opinion on a range of problems.
  • Minimum of English Level 2 (GCSE grade C or equivalent), IELTS or graduate of a UK Medical School.
  • NHS experience
Desirable criteria
  • On the Specialist Register or working towards application.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
  • Ability to supervise multi-disciplinary teams
