Train to Become a Registered Nurse (Adult) or Registered Nurse (Children and Young People) by joining our blended learning Nursing Degree Programme! 

We’re offering an exciting opportunity to start your journey to become a registered nurse, through aninnovative 3 yearpre-registration nursing degree programme.This full time, blended learning course delivers all teaching and assessment online, giving you the flexibility to study while completing hands-on practice placements with us.  

You will be based within the Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust footprint and will experience a variety of clinical placements, allowing you to gain an appreciation of many health and care contexts. On successful completion of all programme and placement requirements, you will be eligible to apply to join the NMC Register as Registered Nurse (Adult) or Registered Nurse (Children and Young People). 

If you have completed prior healthcare training, for example as an Assistant Practitioner, relevant FdSc or Nursing Associate training, you could transfer some of your learning and complete an accelerated programme - this will be discussed at interview.  

Main duties of the job

  • Effectively balance academic, placement, and role demands through strong time management and organisational skills.  

  • Deliver safe, person-centred care under supervision, adhering to health and safety legislation and organisational policies.  

  • Work within the scope of practice of a student nurse, maintaining accountability and practising within professional boundaries.  

  • Collaborate with Practice Assessors to set and achieve SMART objectives for personal and professional development.  

  • Promote equality, value diversity, and raise concerns appropriately to ensure patient safety and professional standards.  

How you’ll learn over the 3 year course:

You’ll be enrolled as an Open University (OU) student and linked with Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust for placements, with theory sessions being taught online by The OU.  

Students will complete 3 blocks of placement per year; the dates and durations of these placements will be discussed at interview stage.   

You must commit to both academic study and placements throughout the course.

Eligibility

You must meet the minimum entry criteria for the programme - GCSE Maths and English (grade C / level 4) or equivalent Functional Skills English and Maths (Level 2) (correct at November 2025). You must be able to evidence with certificates, that you meet the entry criteria prior to interview.  

If you have you completed healthcare-related modules or qualifications at Higher Education level within the last 10 years (e.g. Nursing Associate, Assistant Practitioner, Diploma of Higher Education, Higher Apprenticeship or a degree programme), you may be able to count this study towards The OU’s Pre-Registration Nursing Programme and accelerate your journey.

Important information 

Should your application be shortlisted, you will be invited to attend an interview on 16th, 17th or 19th March 2026, with the aim of starting the programme in October 2026. 

Please note this opportunity is not funded by the Trust and successful applicants are unpaid. Applicants will need to secure funding via the Student Loans Company to cover the cost of their tuition fees and will be entitled to additional financial support whilst on programme.
