Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 4 Senior Tobacco Dependency Advisor to join our Service.  We are looking to recruit a to a Senior Tobacco Dependency Advisor post based in one of the main hospital sites (Lanchester Road Hospital or West Park Hospital). This will be a full-time permanent position with the opportunity to work flexibly between the hours of 8.00am and 6.00pm, Monday to Friday each week.

You will engage regularly with patients to offer advice, support and treatment options, whilst providing support and guidance to a team of Band 3 Tobacco Dependence Advisors. There will be a requirement to travel Trustwide on occasion, so a full clean driving licence is essential to the post. 

The Senior Advisor must have a minimum of 3 years’ experience of working within a mental health setting and at least 1 years prior experience working in a Tobacco Dependency Service as this is essential within the role.

You will have the opportunity to make a real difference to patients by providing specialist advice during an admission. It is essential for this role that you will be fully supportive of the Trusts smokefree policy, acting as a smokefree champion as part of your work.

Main duties of the job

Assess, develop and implement treatment plans for patients identified as smokers throughout the treatment period whilst providing behavioural and motivational support.

Work with patients on a one to one or group basis where appropriate to assess and agree a treatment and support plan to meet their individual requirements.

Assessment and subsequent support may take place in a range of venues including the smoker’s own home.

Report to the relevant tobacco dependency lead nurse on interventions and outcomes on a regular basis.

Ensure that the service adopts a Making Every Contact Count (MECC) approach in contacts with patients

Develop and maintain relationships with individuals and their families to educate, facilitate and promote change, also identifying and managing any risks related to patient care.

Facilitate any transfer of care into Community Stop Smoking Services (CSSS) provision, such as Local Authority CSSS or primary care including GP or Pharmacy services.

Offer therapeutic and supportive interventions to support a quit attempt whilst maintaining patient confidentiality.

Take and record patients carbon monoxide monitor readings and practice safely within infection, prevention, and control measures.

Advise patients on the use of stop smoking pharmacotherapy, including NRT and E-cigarettes.

Contribute to the long-term development of the onsite tobacco dependency treatment service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidate will require either an NVQ Level 3 in Health & Social Care or a Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care inclusive of Literacy and Numeracy Level 2 or equivalent to be recruited in to the position on Band 4.

Current Band 3 staff who fulfil the recommended criteria are welcome to apply for this post.

Previous experience of working with people with mental/social health needs or learning disabilities is essential to the role. Applicants must have worked within Mental Health/Learning Disability services for a minimum of 3 years and have a passion for improving both the physical and mental health of patients in our care. 

As a Senior Tobacco Dependency Advisor, you will be based in one of the Trust main hospital sites (either Lanchester Road Hospital in Durham or West Park Hospital in Darlington) and be responsible for supporting patients identified as smokers to maintain a smokefree status during an admission.

In addition, you will provide dedicated advice and support to a team of Band 3 Tobacco Dependency Advisors across the Trust with support from the Tobacco Dependency Treatment Service Lead and Tobacco Dependency Treatment Service Team Manager.

Essential criteria
  • A knowledge and understanding of drivers of ill health
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of tobacco dependency and treatment

Experience

Essential criteria
  • A minimum of 3 years experience working within mental health or learning disabilities sector
  • Previous experience of working with people with mental/social health needs or learning disabilities
  • Previous experience as a Band 2/3 HCA or equivalent in a care environment
Desirable criteria
  • Self awareness around own limitations and competencies and ability to work within them

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Basic Maths and English skills (minimum Functional Level 2)
  • Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care OR NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care
Desirable criteria
  • National Centre for Smoking Cessation and Training (NCSCT) Level 2 Practitioner Training - Inclusive of the Mental Health module
