Job Advert – Advanced biomedical practitioner
The pathology departments at NTH and STH are currently working collaboratively to develop a joint service with services being delivered on both hospital sites.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a fixed term ( 12 months ) Advanced Practitioner (Dissection) to support our expanding service needs. We welcome applicants who hold the IBMS/RCpath Diploma of Expert Practice (DEP) in Histological Dissection and have experience of complex Category D/E dissection.
Applications will also be welcome from candidates with evidenced experience in Histological dissection who are working towards completion of the DEP, initially employed at Band 7 pending successful completion of the DEP qualification .
Applicants must be able to demonstrate extensive specialist knowledge of Cellular Pathology, technical skills and have the leadership skills needed to adequately support staff training, quality and development. The successful applicant will be working in close partnership with both clinical and management teams to deliver an efficient and cohesive service. Having exemplary communication skills will be a key component for success, as the post-holder will be working closely with a wide range of staff.
Main duties of the job
- The post-holder will communicate provide and receive highly complex specialised information and advice to service users, including clinicians , patients and other departments, both within and without the Trust regarding both investigations required and the interpretation of complex clinical details either by telephone or face-to-face.
- Discuss with the pathologists and clinicians, patient’s clinical history in relation to macroscopic appearances and clinical correlation with naked eye examination, including orientation of complex specimens.
- To liaise with service users - clinicians, patients, other departments by:
o Giving advice on tissue fixation (optimal method, health and safety, duration, incisions, marking of anatomical features etc.)
o Attending and contributing to the following meetings: Multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings, Quality and Audit Group Service Improvement Group and weekly team meetings
o Giving formal presentations to large groups.
o To train junior medical and biomedical scientists in the macroscopic analysis of pathological specimens.
o Liaison with other staff in the department (senior staff, Pathologists, secretaries etc.) on these matters is also required.
o May be involved in disclosure of results of audits to Consultant Medical staff
o Liaise with all members of the laboratory team and across the Pathology Directorate to deliver an appropriate diagnostic service

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- IBMS accredited degree
- IBMS specialist portfolio or demonstrated equivalent specialist training and experience in a relevant discipline
- IBMS Diploma in Expert Practice (Histological Dissection)
- Health and Care Professions Council registered BMS
Desirable criteria
- Management or Leadership Qualification
- Advanced Specialist Diploma in Specimen Dissection
- Registered as a Chartered Scientist
Experience
Essential criteria
- Evidence of proficiency in dissecting a wide range of specimen types and pathologies to RCPath guidelines including cancer resections
- Experience at senior BMS level with an in-depth specialist knowledge of histology to include involvement in diagnostic sample preparation, dissection, leadership and quality management
- Broad experience of all the main sections of a Histology Department
- Experience of Quality Management Systems
Desirable criteria
- Extensive experience at Senior BMS level
- HR related activities e.g. appraisal, sickness absence management
- Managing workflow and experience of “lean” working concepts
Skills
Essential criteria
- Excellent manual dexterity, technical skill and ability to correlate complex clinical information
- Excellent communication and leadership skills.
- Able to understand complex problems quickly and to identify workable solutions
