Job overview

A new opportunity has arisen at the Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital (RACH) in Brighton. We are looking to recruit an experienced and dynamic nurse into our Stoma Care Clinical Nurse Specialist post. In this role you will work with neonates, children and young people both in the hospital setting at Trevor Mann Baby Unit and RACH as well as in the wider community whilst being fully supported by colleagues in the very well established adult stoma care CNS team.

This role can be appointed to at a Band six with a clear pathway for completion of a recognised paediatric stoma nurse course and completion of agreed competencies within an 8-12 month time period. A review would then happen by the Lead Stoma Nurse and Matron to sign off the progression to the Band Seven role.

You will be a highly motivated and responsible nurse dedicated to providing high quality care with the ability to work under pressure with high levels of autonomy. 

This position would be suitable for a registered nurse with proven experience working with children with stomas and with paediatric and or neonatal surgical and colorectal experience. 

You will work closely with our Surgical team, adult stoma CNS team and wider MDT, providing expert care to babies, children and families/carers. You will be key to developing the service, utilising  your organisational, teaching and management skills. Excellent communication skills are essential for this role. 

Main duties of the job

The Paediatric Stoma Care Clinical Nurse Specialist will be based at Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital, Brighton part of UHSussex NHS Foundation Trust.  You will deliver a dedicated and expert stoma care service to children, young people, neonates and premature babies and their families or carers. You will work within our three hospitals and into our wider community area. 

The role involves patient centred individualised care to those undergoing colorectal and urology surgery resulting in a stoma.  You will also support those with fistulae in both secondary and primary care settings

The post holder will set up and run nurse led clinics and provide teaching to a wide range of healthcare professionals and will be able to lead and guide ward based and community nurses. Support will always be available from the wider adult CNS Stoma Nursing Team who have previously been responsible for managing the paediatric caseload.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Ensure and promote excellent communication with all members of the MDT
  • Provide condition related information to children and their families or carers in clinic setting and at the bedside (pre-op and post-op), to include gaining informed consent, requiring empathy and reassurance.
  • Set up and lead once-monthly patient groups within the community, providing information, support etc
  • Attend weekly clinical meetings as needed to foster collaborative MDT working.
  • Ensure confidentiality and adherence to data protection legislation.
  • Ensure that a full and accurate record of care is documented in a timely manner utilising appropriate nursing and medical systems as well as our bespoke stoma care database
  • Ensure stoma care database and diary are used effectively and accurately
  • Promote inclusiveness and treat people with kindness and compassion
  • Promote a team ethos and a positive working environmen
  • Ensure grievances/disputes/complaints are investigated thoroughly in a timely manner.
