Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (UHSx) for a highly experienced senior nurse to join the Cancer Division. The division was formed when UHSx was created following the merger of two Trusts in 2022. Serving a population of 1.8m, UHSx is now the second biggest provider of cancer services in England.

With services based at all four acute hospital sites and a Cancer Centre at the Royal Sussex County Hospital (RSCH) in Brighton, plus a satellite radiotherapy service at Eastbourne District General Hospital, the division has responsibility for the following clinical specialities: Oncology (including Systemic anti-cancer therapies & radiotherapy) , Clinical Haematology, Palliative & End of Life Care, the Faster Diagnostic Standard nursing team, breast surgery and screening for Sussex and the CVAD service for the Trust. The division is also responsible for trust wide cancer management and performance.

Main duties of the job

Reporting to the Chief of Division, the Divisional Director of Nursing & Allied Health Professionals works in partnership with the Chief of Division and Divisional Operations Director. These three roles, ‘Divisional Triumvirate’, have operational accountability for the workforce, service delivery, clinical quality and safety and financial control for the division. Together as a team, the Triumvirate are responsible for defining divisional and Trust wide objectives relevant to cancer, palliative and End of Life Care to meet corporate goals and for ensuring that quality standards are met, and performance addressed where this is not the case. The post holder will also take a lead role in developing the workforce and strategic plan for the new cancer centre planned at the RSCH site.

We are excited to offer this opportunity to work in an inclusive and dynamic environment where we are committed to progressing an ambitious transformation of our services across our newly merged Trust. You will be a core part of the divisional leadership triumvirate team led by the Chief of Service for the Division and the Director of Operations and be an empowering, visible leader, working closely with our Divisional nursing, AHP workforce, medical and operational and wider Trust nursing leadership teams.
