Job overview

To efficiently maintain and provide a reliable engineering service at St Richards Hospital and other trust sites. Perform work including activities which are complex and/or non-routine. Accountable for calibration and fault finding on a wide range of plant and equipment within their area of responsibility. Undertaking planned maintenance, reactive repairs, and minor improvement works across the hospital as directed by management, ensuring compliance with hospital safety standards and procedures are upheld.

 

 

Main duties of the job

The Multiskilled Craftsperson  will be employed on work appropriate to their core skills. They will however be expected to perform in areas where deemed competent and suitably trained to a multiskilled level, with the intention of reaching levels of flexibility and site competence to enable them to work independently or together with all trades within the Estates department.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

A Technical knowledge and understanding of the following core skill areas are required: -

•    Planned Preventative & Reactive Maintenance.
•    Emergency Generator Testing
•    LV Switchboards
•    Minor electrical installs and alterations.
•    Minor plumbing installs and alterations  
•    3 phase motors
•    Electrical Distribution systems and boards including UPS
•    Lift maintenance including entrapment release 
•    BMS controls.
•    Air Conditioning and ventilation.
•    Standard & Emergency lighting circuit testing and repair
•    Fire alarm maintenance & testing
•    Kitchen and catering equipment.
•    Gas fired steam Boilers and low-pressure hot water systems.
•    Cold water systems & storage tanks.
•    Compressed air plant services.
•    General plumbing duties
•    Domestic hot water services and water softeners.
•    Heating services.
•    Medical piped gases and vacuum.
•    Refrigeration plant and services.
•    Steam and condensate plant and services.
•    Drainage and waste disposal system
•    All other engineering services under the control of the Workshop Manager

Person specification

Experience/ Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • City and Guilds plus relevant experience demonstrating knowledge at a level equivalent to HNC
  • Completion of a recognized electrical trade apprenticeship and experience in a similar technical discipline
  • Experience in all aspects of mechanical and building services
  • Experience of working on large complex systems
Desirable criteria
  • AP Medical Gases (HTM 02-01)
  • Experience of maintenance and of BMS controls -01)

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Good communication skills at all levels, able to communicate highly technical information. Be able to communicate with other staff groups and have a good understanding of patient safety issues.
  • Good Understanding of complex mechanical drawings and computer data. Be able to interpret and make decisions based on this data.
Desirable criteria
  • Have extensive knowledge of hospital operational estates issues, including an in depth understanding of maintenance procedures within a medical environment.
  • Have a sound knowledge of safe working practices, standards and regulations appertaining to electrical systems.
  • Be able to use software systems for job monitoring and control.

Physical Skills

Essential criteria
  • To be able to concentrate for periods of time. Physically fit and able to work in adverse conditions.

Other Qualities

Essential criteria
  • Participate in the On call rota/out of hours at short notice
