Job overview

The Medical Photographer will provide high-quality photographic services to support the ophthalmology clinics, capturing images of patients upon admission and before discharge. The role includes supporting the wards with clinical imaging needs, ensuring accurate and timely documentation of patient conditions. This position plays a vital role in supporting clinical teams, contributing to patient care, and maintaining compliance with regulatory standards. The ideal candidate will possess technical expertise in medical photography, attention to detail, and a strong understanding of clinical safety requirements.

Main duties of the job

Main Duties of the Job:

  1. Capture Medical Images: Take high-quality, accurate photographs of patients for ophthalmology clinics, documenting conditions upon admission and before discharge.

  2. Support Clinical Teams: Work closely with medical and nursing staff to capture relevant images for clinical assessments, reports, and patient care records.

  3. Cross-Site Support: Provide imaging services across multiple wards and clinics as required, ensuring timely and efficient delivery of photographic support.

  4. Ensure Compliance: Adhere to all statutory, regulatory, and hospital guidelines, ensuring patient confidentiality and compliance with data protection laws.

  5. Equipment Management: Maintain and manage medical photography equipment, ensuring it is in good working condition and available when needed.

  6. Documentation and Record Keeping: Accurately file and catalogue images in patient records, ensuring correct tagging and archiving for future reference.

  7. Collaborate with Multidisciplinary Teams: Communicate effectively with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure photographs meet the clinical requirements and contribute to patient care.

  8. Professional Development: Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in medical photography techniques, ensuring the application of best practices in clinical imaging.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc Medical Illustration or equivalent qualification
  • Registered Medical Illustration Practitioner, Academy of Healthcare Science (AHCS)
  • Evidence of ongoing CPD in a range of specialist medical photography to masters equivalent level.
Desirable criteria
  • Recognised management qualification
  • Graphic design qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • 5 years minimum as post graduate medical illustration practitioner.
  • Specialist photographic techniques including Dermoscopy, Orthodontic Photography and Ophthalmic Photography (Fundus, Fluorescein Angiography, ICG angiography, Slit Lamp).
  • Experience in operating theatre photography
  • Apple Mac and Windows operating systems
  • Experience using Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office.
  • Experience in digital image management. Proven experience developing Departmental Services
Desirable criteria
  • Managing Other Staff.
  • Research and Audit.
  • Clinical Trials
  • Infra-red and ultraviolet photography.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to demonstrate a wide knowledge and understanding of specialist clinical, ophthalmic, orthodontic and standardised photographic techniques and protocols – including Dermoscopy, Fluorescein Angiography and the use of specialist equipment
  • Proven ability in producing standardised and demonstrative clinical photographs. Able to produce high quality and truly representative clinical images and provide robust Image Management across the Trust
  • Able to provide high quality standardised clinical images for use as part of clinical trials.
  • Proven ability in producing Public Relations photographs.
  • Extensive knowledge of developments in photography, video, graphic design, digital imaging, multimedia and associated technologies to advance the service in the most effective way.
  • Knowledge of using and learning new equipment and techniques as part of Clinical Trials and departmental Audits.
  • Highly computer literate with sound knowledge and experience of photographic manipulation and image management software.
  • Responsible for the storage, security, confidentiality and copyright of patient photographic and video images and data across the Trust
