Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced part-time Radiographer to join our Community Radiology Service in East Sussex for 22.5 hours per week. Successful applicants can expect to work at Lewes Victoria Hospital, Uckfield Community Hospital, Chailey Clinical Services and Crowborough War Memorial Hospital. 

Our departments consist of 3 well-equipped digital x-ray rooms, 1 CR x-ray room,  3  ultrasound rooms and a brand new Bone Densitometry suite.

The department performs a wide range of X-ray examinations from a variety of referral sources including Primary Care, Musculoskeletal services and the Minor Injury Unit on-site. We provide an X-ray and Ultrasound service for the local population and Bone Densitometry scanning for a wider population within East Sussex. 

As a member of the team you will be helping us to provide a responsive and efficient service in keeping with our Foundation Trust vision and values. You will be able to display excellent interpersonal skills with a caring patient-centred and flexible approach to work.

We are looking to fill a part time (22.5 hours per week) post ideally working Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. 

Our current working hours are 9am-5pm Monday to Friday. 11am-5pm Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays, 

 

Main duties of the job

To carry out x-ray examinations which comply with the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR99) and the ionising Radiations (Medical exposure) Regulations 2017 [IR(ME)R2017], ensuring good practice in accordance with the guidelines set by the Royal College of Radiologists and the College of Radiographers.

To carry out supervision as per the trusts policy on other staff members. 

To  supervise Student Radiographers.

Perform imaging examinations and care for patients during these examinations, respecting their rights of privacy and confidentially, thereby providing a high quality service to both patients and clinicians.

To be able to work independently, work within a clearly defined set of department protocols and make informed clinical decisions in the absence of a Radiologist.

To ensure patient confidentiality and data protection within the Trusts guidelines.

Undertake the quality assurance testing of equipment as part of daily routine if required.

To abide by the Trusts Health and Safety Policy to ensure safe practice whilst manual and patient handling, working with radiation, hazardous chemicals, noxious fumes and bodily fluids.

 To observe the provisions of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, always maintaining a safe system of work and reporting any hazards.

 To report any incident involving staff, patients or visitors to the Radiology Team Leader.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To undertake radiographic examinations using analytical, judgemental 
and physical skills to achieve the appropriate high quality image.

To liaise with referrers and service users to maintain an efficient service

To assist referring Emergency Nurse Practitioners in the Minor Injury 
Unit by employing the Red Dot Scheme for identifying abnormal 
appearances on x-ray images.

To use the CRIS radiology information system for patient management, 
data collection and storage. To use PACS for data management and 
storage. The information on both these systems is shared with other 
sites.

To be aware of the Trust’s emergency planning processes and follow 
such processes as necessary in the event of a sudden unexpected 
incident

To work with the Radiology Team Lead to ensure the day to day smooth 
running of the department including absence cover

To take responsibility for Health & Safety issues and reporting within the 
department

To undertake training as necessary in line with development of the post

To participate fully in the development review (appraisal) process and 
undertake Continuing Professional Development as required.

To participate in the out of hours radiographer rota at Uckfield 
Community Hospital

Person specification

Qualifications/skills

Essential criteria
  • Degree level qualification in radiography or equivalent professional radiography qualification.
  • State registration with the Health Professions Council.

  • Evidence of CPD
  • Each applicant will be expected to demonstrate a basic understanding of the principles of equal opportunities in relation to the post.
  • Demonstrates a good standard of basic IT skills
Desirable criteria

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Ability to supervise and train staff/students in clinical applications
  • Must be a skilled communicator with the ability to convey complex technical / clinical information in an understandable, manner to patients.
  • Must be able to handle/lift equipment and patients.
  • Will be required to communicate with consultants and other clinical staff on sensitive clinical matters
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to use radiology, computed radiography and PACS IT systems
  • Organisation of daily departmental workload, planning appointment schedules for patients

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of Ionising Radiations Regulations 1999 and Ionising Radiations (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2000.
  • Experienced radiographer, relevant experience.
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to work autonomously, to organise own workload and to make informed clinical decisions in the absence of a radiologist.
