Job overview

If you have highly efficient  secretarial and organisational skills, an opportunity has arisen for a medical secretary position within the Oncology service at Worthing hospital.  This varied role provides support to the Oncology Cons, Registrar and CNS teams and the multidisciplinary clinical team as part of the UHSussex trust wide service.  The post requires full time working Monday - Friday.

We are looking for an individual who has the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, patients and the clinical staff

Previous secretarial/administration experience and typing skills are essential, as are knowledge of the hospital environment and medical terminology

Our ideal candidate will be flexible and adaptable and willing to work as part of our busy and supportive, friendly team

Main duties of the job

To work as part of the administration team to provide accurate and efficient secretarial support for the Oncology Service at Worthing.

Your role will involve working as part of a busy team supporting the the Oncology service and patients at Worthing hospital.  It is a wide and varied role with tasks including liaising with patients, other departments  and clinicians.  If you enjoy being a team player this post offers variety and the opportunity to play a key role in supporting the team with the efficient running of the administrative service.

Specific duties include:

  • Transcription of author dictation
  • Supporting with clinician generated administration relative to the patient pathway
  • Reviewing patient outcomes to ensure next step in the pathway is booked
  • Fielding patient queries
  • Tracking of investigations
  • Cross cover for colleagues where required

Essential criteria
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to work to deadlines and meet conflicting demands
  • Excellent knowledge of a full range of secretarial procedures and office duties
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Excellent knowledge of MS Office, particularly Excel
  • Experience of minute taking
Desirable criteria
  • Previous NHS Medical Secretary experience
  • Knowledge of Patient Information System (PAS)
  • Experience of audio typing

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • 3 GCSEs including English & Mathematics Grade A-C or equivalent
  • RSA3 and/or knowledge acquired through experience
Desirable criteria
  • An appropriate qualification in word processing or typing, for example RSA III or equivalent AMSPAR diploma
  • Medical Terminology Qualification

  • Coordinating and working as part of a cohesive team
