Job overview

We are looking for a dynamic and motivated Band 6 deputy sister to join our team on Coombes Ward.  Coombes ward is a 27 bedded ward, we care for Trauma and Orthopaedic patients.

Main duties of the job

This is an ideal opportunity for a band 5 nurse to advance their management skills, leadership skills and support the ward manager. This will be achieved through a range of educational and development sessions, the ward manager and colleagues. 

You will need to have a positive attitude towards team building and ability to maintain excellent standards of care whilst ensuring that our patients are top priority.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  1. Is responsible for the assessment, planning and implementation of care and assists in the interpretation of data relevant to the patient’s condition and progress with regards to their discharge.
  2. Assists in the identification of patient problems and needs with the patient, their carers, senior nursing staff and other staff as appropriate
  3. Identifies the priorities of care for patients
  4. Identifies realistic goals for patients in care plans
  5. Organises time for staff development and teaching around orthopaedic nursing skills.
  6. Assist the ward manager in liaising with speciality lead clinicians and consultants regarding effective use of the wards resources
  7. Administers drugs and treatments as prescribed according to the NMC guidelines and the Trust’s Guidelines for the Safe and Secure Handling of Medicines
  8. Changes care plans and goals according to evaluation and discussion with the multidisciplinary team
  9. Demonstrates an understanding and skill in the care and management of the critically ill patient
  10. Works closely with all members of the care team to ensure the needs of the critically ill patient are met
  11. Demonstrates proficiency in the care of PICC/CVC lines and the administration of IV Therapy in accordance with Trust Policy.
  12. Maintains accurate documentation to facilitate the continuity of care for patients transferred to other areas
  13. Ensures that discharge review documentation is completed and reimbursement material is communicated to relevant body in timely fashion
  14. Liaise with nursing and clerical staff to enable efficient administration of ward work
  15. Liaise with Hospital discharge team in ensuring reductions in patient length of stay are achieved
  16. To promote and develop the Orthopaedic Enhanced Recovery Pathway working with the ERP lead nurse.
  17. Ensures that the interactive whiteboard and Medway is accurate and maintained.
  18. Act as patient/carer advocate at all times
  19. Is able to reflect on care implemented on the ward and ensure it accurately reflects the standards of care expected.

  • Practice assessor course or sign off mentorship course
