Job overview

As the Team Leader Dietitian for Critical Care, you will provide advanced clinical leadership and specialist dietetic expertise for the nutritional management of critically ill patients, including those with complex needs such as trauma, transplant, burns, and multi-organ failure. You will lead and coordinate the critical care dietetic team, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based care across Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital.

You will be responsible for service development, quality improvement, and the implementation of best practice guidelines within critical care nutrition. Acting as the key point of contact for critical care nutrition, you will represent the dietetic service at multidisciplinary meetings, directorate forums, and Trust-wide initiatives. The role includes line management of dietitians and support staff, supporting recruitment, induction, and ongoing professional development.

You will also provide expert education, training, and supervision to dietitians, students, and the wider MDT, and act as a placement educator for student dietitians. The post requires flexible working across sites and collaboration with a wide range of internal and external partners to ensure seamless, patient-centred care.

Main duties of the job

As Team Leader Dietitian for Critical Care, you will provide advanced clinical leadership and specialist dietetic care for critically ill patients, including those with complex needs such as trauma, transplant, burns, and multi-organ failure. You will lead and coordinate the critical care dietetic team, ensuring high standards of evidence-based, patient-centred care. Key duties include expert assessment and management of complex nutritional needs, line management and supervision of dietitians and assistants, and leading service development, quality improvement, and audit projects. You will deliver education and training to the MDT and students, represent the service at multidisciplinary meetings, and ensure compliance with national standards and Trust policies. The role requires flexible working across sites and collaboration with a range of internal and external partners.

Essential criteria
  • BSc or Post Graduate Diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics.
  • HCPC Registration
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate training in critical care nutrition.
  • Leadership/Management qualification.
  • Clinical Supervisory Skills Course.

Knowledge, Training & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant post-registration experience in critical care dietetics.
  • Evidence of effective multidisciplinary team (MDT) working.
  • Experience of leading a team.
  • Experience of teaching and supervising others.
  • Involvement in audit and/or research.
  • Advanced clinical skills in managing complex enteral and parenteral nutrition.
  • Experience of leading and developing a specialist service.
