Job overview
Applicants are invited to apply for the role of Clinical Research Fellow in Infection from August 2025. This is a twelve month, fixed term post, appointable at CT1/2 level.
Main duties of the job
Applications are welcomed from suitably qualified and enthusiastic candidates wishing to pursue a career or training in infectious diseases and academic medicine. This post will assist the Infection Research Group
(IRG) in the running of ongoing and forthcoming clinical research studies, together with time to develop a research project that would complement current IRG interests. Current NIHR funded studies that the
department takes part in include SNAP, PRONTO, BioDRIVE AFS, EXTEND. Commercial studies have included several vaccine trials and both observational and interventional studies. There are ongoing studies
within the department to support academic trainees that could form the basis of projects for appointees.
The IRG lead clinicians and their research areas of interest are listed below:
- Prof Gavin Barlow (Professor in Infection at Hull York Medical School, Hon Consultant, Hull Teaching Hospitals) - Interests in antimicrobial stewardship / orthopaedic infection / sepsis /
clinical trials - Dr Nicholas Easom (Consultant in Infection, Hull Teaching Hospitals, Hon Senior Lecturer HYMS)
– Interests in viral hepatitis, blood stream infection - Dr Patrick Lillie (Consultant in Infection, Hull Teaching Hospitals, Hon Senior Lecturer HYMS) –
Interests in infections in people who inject drugs, vaccinology, long term outcomes post infection.
All of the infection consultants support the research outputs of the department and are involved in research
studies.

Essential criteria
- Full Registration with the GMC
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MRCP(UK) or equivalent qualification
- Medical Degree
- Intent to register for higher degree at HYMS
Desirable criteria
- A research-based degree other than medicine (e.g. intercalated BSc or MSc)
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- Successful completion of Foundation Training in the UK, or on track to successfully complete Foundation Training in time for commencement of the post in August 2024, or currently in Core or Higher Level Training Post
- Good communication skills with patients and others, including in consenting processes and via presentations
Management Experience
Desirable criteria
- Track record of research presentations and academic publications.
- Experience of multicentre clinical research
Teaching and Research
Essential criteria
- Research analysis. Research reporting.
- Evidence of participation in research design and delivery
Desirable criteria
- Original peer-reviewed research publications
- Medical statistics experience
Applicant requirements
You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
The postholder will have regular contact with vulnerable people and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
