Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic, kind and inclusive Infant Feeding Lead Midwife to join our fantastic public health team. 

You will take the lead to promote, protect and sustain best practice in relation to infant feeding issues across maternity services.

The post holder will be responsible for co-managing the infant feeding team.

Main duties of the job

You should:

  • Act as a clinical expert and resource for first line information for families and professionals in promoting, supporting and normalising breastfeeding, safe infant feeding practices and responsive parenting.
  • Ensure the infant feeding team offers appropriate emotional support and practical advice to families within the care of the maternity services where needed.
  • Promote and maintain the ethos of Family Integrated Care
  • Strive to increase breastfeeding numbers in line with government targets, national specifications and locally recommended guidelines
  • Ensure policies and trust guidelines are upheld in order to promote and maintain a quality service
  • Audit and monitor initiatives and quality improvements to increase breastfeeding and breast milk numbers and standards of care within the service.
  • Provide education and training for the multi-disciplinary team working across the Maternity services.
  • Work as part of the infant feeding team to continue initiatives towards achieving full UNICEF baby-friendly accreditation and other quality improvements within the maternity services.

Education/ Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse/Midwife with current NMC Registration
  • First Level Degree in related healthcare discipline or substantial experiential equivalence
  • Evidence of learning beyond registration in relation to infant feeding evidenced by relevant professional portfolio
  • Mentorship Qualification
  • UNICEF Infant Feeding Leads Course Train the Trainer (2 days) or equivalent
  • Embedding UNICEF BFI Standards (BFI training)
  • UNICEF BFI Audit training.
  • Qualification/Course in Frenotomy
Desirable criteria
  • Lactation Consultant GB qualification or equivalent qualification

Knowledge, Training & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience working in an area specialising in infant feeding
  • Substantial experience supporting dyads with on-going feeding difficulties due to a range of issues
  • Demonstrate the application of research based practice.
  • Clinical audit and standard setting
  • Experience of multi-agency working
  • Experience of family integrated care
  • Understanding of the function of the tongue and impacts on breastfeeding
  • Able to demonstrate delivery of quality improvement projects
  • Willing to undergo further training as necessary.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and experience of the parent infant relationship, identification of positive interactions and management of well & sick infant feeding challenges
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the Baby Friendly Initiative and implementation in practice.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of Audit.
  • Demonstrates a sound knowledge base of breastfeeding.
  • Understanding of safeguarding procedures.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of equality and diversity agenda

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to provide formal and informal education to staff and families around infant feeding.
  • Assess, diagnose and divide a tongue tie where appropriate for newborn inpatients and within the specialist feeding clinic as outpatients
  • Work collaboratively with other infant feeding team members to provide specialist clinics and support for families.
  • Audit using the BFI standards for both infant feeding and tongue tie services.
  • Audit readmissions via HUTH reporting system
  • Good communication - verbal/written
  • Be able to work on own initiative
  • Works well with in a team
  • Demonstrates understanding of confidentiality
  • Participate in standard setting and research projects
  • Evidence showing clinical and professional development
  • To be able to plan, assess, evaluate and implement patient care
