Job overview

The Neurosurgical department is based on the 4th floor where there are 28 Neurosurgical beds on Ward 4 and 8 HOB beds on ward 40 along with a Day of Surgery admission Lounge.  The level II and III beds are located on the 3rd floor in GHDU/GICU with 24-hour intensivist cover provided. Some elective spinal surgery has moved to Castle Hill Hospital (CHH), with beds on Ward C9 and dedicated fully equipped theatre with laminar flow.

 

The Neurosurgical ward incorporates a shared Consultant Office, Clinical Fellow and Registrar Office, Seminar Room, physiotherapy suite, 2 clinical assessment rooms and a quiet room. The seminar room includes a well-stocked library and has been upgraded incorporating dual projection to facilitate academic and clinical meetings. Additional consultant, secretarial and paramedical office accommodation is provided in a separate building on the Hull Royal Infirmary site.

 

 The Neuro Oncology MDT meeting takes place every Thursday afternoon in very modern RTEC suite at Hull Royal Infirmary with large television screens for multiple projections and with video links to Castle Hill Hospital / Sheffield and other sites. The Spinal MDT on a Friday morning is in the seminar teaching room on Ward 40. The service has an established Skull base MDT & Clinic on a Friday at CHH.  Vertebroplasty, Neuromodulation, neurovascular and pituitary MDTS are also carried out regularly.   

 

 

 

 

 

 

Main duties of the job

 

The primary objective of the post holder is to provide a high-quality patient service provision. They will be expected to gain general neurosurgical and complex spinal competencies in the post. He or she will be expected to work collaboratively with their consultant supervisors, peers and juniors to facilitate the work of the department.

 

The Fellow will be allocated to consultants.

 Different rotation patterns are available, covering short segment spinal deformity, degenerative conditions, Neuromodulation including spinal cord stimulator and Intrathecal Baclofen and Morphine services and spinal oncology in accordance with the fellow's area of interest and development during the fellowship. There is opportunity to work with the Pain Management services for those keen to develop their competencies in Pain Management and Neuromodulation. The post attracts standard tariff salary with a neurosurgical SpR (cranial & spinal) on-call commitment. The basic salary is £48,075 (ST3+ trainee on the 2016 JD contract). In addition to there is an additional allowance depending on the on-call and weekend rota commitment (See Section 4)

The Fellow will be also required to cover non -spinal lists and clinics depending on service requirements

The Fellow will be on the general neurosurgical registrar (resident) rota covering all neurosurgery emergencies and will require to have a degree of independence in doing some cases.
