Job overview
The successful candidate for this appointment will join an expanding department of Ophthalmology. This is a substantive post, which will receive CESR training opportunities. The appointee will be joining 21 Consultant Ophthalmologists, 6 Specialty Doctors and 5 Trainees. The successful candidate will work 12 PA’s a week, which will include 8 DCC and 2SPA split, and 2PAs to cover on-call commitments.
Main duties of the job
Duties other than those clinical duties specified will be in accordance with the Job Plan agreed between the Appointee, the present Consultants and the Chief Executive. The Job Plan allows time for Administration, Teaching and Medical
Audit. Participation in audit/appraisal and CME is mandatory under clinical governance/GMC guidance.
All clinicians may be required to work on any of the Trust’s sites and across the seven day period where necessary.
Secretarial support and appropriate office accommodation and IT facilities will be provided.

Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
- • MBBS or equivalent qualification
Desirable criteria
- Diploma of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, DRCOphth or FRCS Ophthalmology (Glasgow)
Clinical Experience / Clinical Skills
Essential criteria
- Evidence of ST1 competencies or equivalent in Ophthalmology with prior Glaucoma experience.
- Ability to manage general, emergency, ophthalmic and paediatric problems.
- Ability to record detailed legible medical notes
- Demonstrate evidence based practice
- Particular experience in Glaucoma management
- OCT analysis skills
Desirable criteria
- Experience in Ophthalmic surgery
- Evidence of Glaucoma subspecialty training.
Management and Administration Experience
Essential criteria
- Ability to manage and lead medical/surgical teams
- Ability to lead on smooth and efficient running of the unit
- Ability to organise, prioritise and manage high intensity workload
- Prior use of Medisoft or another electronic patient record
- Ability to use Electronic Patient Record.
Desirable criteria
- Ability to develop, present and operationalise coherent ideas for service development/ delivery
Professional Registration
Essential criteria
- Full Registration with the GMC
Teaching, Audit and Research
Essential criteria
- Experience of supervising junior medical staff
- Commitment to formal and informal teaching of medical staff, AHPs and medical students
- Ability to extrapolate clinical research evidence to care for individual patients
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of having conducted a practice-changing audit
- Original peer-reviewed research publications
- Evidence of participation in audit
Personal Attributes
Essential criteria
- Ability to work flexibly in a changing health service
- Excellent manner with patients, being sensitive to their needs and fears
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, GPs, Nurses and other health professionals and flex style as appropriate
