Job overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Orthoptist to join our friendly and forward-thinking team of 11 orthoptists at Hull Royal Infirmary. This is a fantastic opportunity to become part of a dynamic department offering a wide range of orthoptic services in a supportive and innovative environment.

You will have the opportunity to work within a multidisciplinary team supporting:

  • Paediatric Ophthalmology
  • Adult Ocular Motility Clinics
  • Neuro-Ophthalmology
  • Low Vision and Visual Stress Clinics
  • Community Vision Screening Services 

Our department is HCPC-accredited for hosting undergraduate orthoptic student placements, and you will also have the chance to contribute to our in-house teaching programme.

Main duties of the job

The post will be a Band 5 / 6 dependent on experience and will be based at Hull Royal Infirmary. The department provides a full range of orthoptic services, supporting an excellent team of Paediatric Ophthalmologists, Adult Motility specialist as well as Neuro-Ophthalmology clinics. The service is also responsible for providing Low Vision services, Visual Stress clinic and community vision screening services.

Dependent on experience, you may have the opportunity to support the service developing extended roles. There will also be the opportunity to participate in the Department’s teaching programme.

Education/ Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • To possess an Honours Degree in Orthoptics BSc, BMedSci or a Diploma from the British Orthoptic Council (DBO)
  • To be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council and to provide evidence of professional development and commitment to life-long learning
Desirable criteria
  • IT knowledge
  • EPR knowledge

Knowledge, Training & Experience

Essential criteria
  • To have a minimum of 12 months or equivalent experience in all aspects of clinical Orthoptics.
  • To have experience of visual field assessment.
  • To have evidence of working successfully as part of a multi-disciplinary team or independently.
  • To demonstrate good organisational and planning skills.
  • To demonstrate an understanding of professional ethics and their application in practice.
  • To have health and safety risk awareness.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous clinical experience
  • Extended role experience
  • Experience supervising orthoptic students

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

  • To have advanced clinical reasoning skills.
