Job overview

A 24 month post is available in Hull for an experienced senior Clinical Fellow (ST4 - Registrar) in Paediatrics to start as soon as possible. 

Acute Children’s ward is placed on the 2nd floor of the tower block at Hull Royal Infirmary close to A & E and the adult intensive care unit, placed on the ground and third floor respectively.

You will have the unique opportunity to work within a busy but supportive, Consultant-led children's service comprising of a 22 bedded in-patient unit called Woodland ward, Paediatric assessment unit comprising of 9 cubicles, 4 bedded Paediatric high dependency unit and Children's outpatients. 

Children’s outpatient department is on the ground floor in the Women’s and children building where the maternity and neonatal unit are based. 

Department of Paediatrics has 20 Paediatric Consultants who have their individual special interests and besides general paediatric clinics there are specialist clinics in all fields. We also have Paediatric surgery and Paediatric neurosurgery clinics at Hull Royal Infirmary

Main duties of the job

Work Pattern

General Paediatrics Tier 2 or Registrar rota is 1 in 10 rota that includes short days, long days, weekends, twilight shifts and night shifts. We start at 9 am, long days finish at 10 pm, twilight shifts are from 1 to 10pm and night shifts start at 9pm and finish at 10am the next day. General Paediatric rota is separate to the neonatal rota.  Your work pattern will be issued with your offer letter, confirming your shifts and any pay enhancements.

The Role

  • Assessment and management of children attending Paediatric assessment unit (including resus), observation area, and those admitted to the Childrens ward
  • Liaison with other hospitals regarding transfer of patients to specialist units
  • Working with ward and community nurses to support ambulatory services
  • Child protection cases that present to PAU. There are opportunities to attend child protection meetings and gain further child protection experience
  • Working alongside the consultants in general paediatric clinics . Clinic commitments can be tailored to your interest and experience
  • Supervision of SHOs, including GPVTS, paediatric  trainees
  • To communicate effectively with other health professionals and service providers

Professional Registration

Essential criteria
  • • Full Registration with the GMC and licence to practice

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • • MBBS or equivalent qualification
  • • Valid EPLS/APLS certificate
  • • Good knowledge of Paediatrics
  • • Child protection training
Desirable criteria
  • • MRCPCH
  • • Postgraduate qualification in Education or significant experience in post graduate training

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • • At least 1 year UK experience at Registrar level
  • • At least 1 year UK experience at Registrar level

Management and Administration Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Ability to lead on smooth and efficient running of the unit
  • • Ability to organise, prioritise and manage high intensity workload
  • • Familiarity with current IT software packages
Desirable criteria
  • • Ability to develop, present and operationalise coherent ideas for service development/ delivery

Teaching, Audit and Research

Essential criteria
  • • Commitment to formal and informal teaching of medical staff, AHPs and medical students
  • • Evidence of participation in audit
  • • Ability to extrapolate clinical research evidence to care for individual patients
Desirable criteria
  • • Evidence of having conducted a practice-changing audit
  • • Experience of teaching/ training in clinical courses
  • • Original peer-reviewed research publications

Personal Attributes

Essential criteria
  • • Good oral and written communication skills in English
  • • Ability to work flexibly in a changing health service
  • • Excellent manner with patients, being sensitive to their needs and fears
  • • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, GPs, Nurses and other health professionals and flex style as appropriate
Desirable criteria
  • • Ability to communicate effectively with external agencies and other disciplines
