Job overview

 

The post holder will be appointed as a Consultant Paediatrician with primary responsibility for providing senior clinical leadership and supervision within the Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU) and Safeguarding unit (Anlaby suite).

Key clinical duties include:

·         The post holder will be the lead SUDIC paediatrician and support the Joint agency response

·         Working with the Independent CDOP Chair, Review provide strategic and professional leadership across the health economy in relation to the child death overview process.

·         They will contribute to the development of local multiagency policy and procedures including training relating to the child death overview process and provide advice, as appropriate, to the ICBs and NHS providers in relation to the development of health specific policies.

·         The post-holder will deliver clinical safeguarding child protection medical assessments in the dedicated children’s safeguarding facility, the Anlaby Suite, following all medical examinations the post-holder will be responsible for producing written reports/statements for child protection and civil/criminal court proceedings

·         They will have some flexible sessions providing overall consultant supervision to the PAU including twilight shifts, supported by a middle-grade doctor and Tier 1 resident doctor. Overtime as the service stabilises there will be oncall commitments supporting the General Paediatric service

 

Main duties of the job

·         This post comprises 8 Programmed Activities (PAs)

·         1PA Supporting Professional Activity (SPA) is allocated, covering professional development, teaching, audit, and governance.

·         An indicative job plan will be provided; however, this may evolve in line with organisational vision, service development, and population needs.

·         The timetable can be flexible and may be adapted to reflect the appointee’s special interests and expertise, subject to service requirements and future funding availability.

·         The job plan will be formally reviewed six months after appointment to ensure that the allocation of PAs appropriately reflects the responsibilities of the post.

·         There is an intention for this role to evolve with service development with potential amendments to the job plan in the future.

·         The post holder will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, including the training and supervision of junior doctors and other healthcare professionals.

·         Participation in educational supervision and clinical supervision of trainees is expected, subject to appropriate accreditation .

Professional Registration

Essential criteria
  • On the GMC’s Specialist Register OR within six months of CCT at time of scheduled interview
  • Valid BLS Training
  • • Ability to communicate effectively with external agencies and other disciplines
Desirable criteria
  • Valid APLS and NLS (this may be mandatory for some posts

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • MRCPCH(UK) or equivalent qualification
  • Valid APLS certificate
  • Valid level3 safeguarding training
Desirable criteria
  • • Postgraduate degree: e.g. MD, PhD
  • • Postgraduate qualification in Education or significant experience in post graduate training

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Ability to offer sound clinical opinion on range of acute paediatric medical conditions
  • • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • • Be clinically active in the field of safeguarding/child protection, as part of their clinical commitments
  • Previous experience of multiagency child death review processes
Desirable criteria
  • Complex safeguarding Ambulatory care training Knowledge of advance safeguarding – having completed level 4 training as a minimum and be willing to work towards level 5

Management and Administration Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Ability to manage and lead medical/surgical teams
  • • Ability to lead on smooth and efficient running of the unit
  • • Ability to organise, prioritise and manage high intensity workload
  • • In-depth understanding of RCPCH guidelines: Sudden unexpected death in infancy and child-hood (2016)
Desirable criteria
  • • Ability to develop, present and operationalise coherent ideas for service development/ delivery

Teaching, Audit and Research

Essential criteria
  • • Experience of supervising junior medical staff
  • • Commitment to formal and informal teaching of medical staff, AHPs and medical students
  • • Evidence of participation in audit
  • • Evidence of participation in audit
Desirable criteria
  • • Evidence of having conducted a practice-changing audit
  • • Experience of teaching/ training in clinical courses e.g. IMPACT Course, Faculty, ALS Instructor, ALERT Instructor
  • • Original peer-reviewed research publications
