Assistant Service Manager

Job overview

The Assistant Service Manager will be a key member of the Divisional Management Team within the Surgery Division at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust. Based at Basildon Hospital, the post holder will support the Service Unit Manager/General Manager in ensuring the effective operational delivery of services across General Surgery, Colorectal and Breast specialties.

This is a dynamic Band 7 role requiring strong analytical skills, excellent communication, and the ability to work independently while contributing to wider strategic and operational objectives.

 

Main duties of the job

In this role, you will support the Service Unit Manager and wider Divisional Management Team to ensure the smooth operational delivery of services across General Surgery, Colorectal and Breast. You will oversee key access standards, including cancer pathways and 18‑week RTT, through effective PTL management, data analysis and performance reporting. Working closely with medical staffing coordinators, you will help ensure rotas support safe and continuous service delivery, while also contributing to business planning, service development and financial monitoring. You will lead and support service improvement initiatives, using capacity and demand analysis to identify shortfalls and implement both short‑ and long‑term solutions.

 

The role includes managing administrative and clerical teams, ensuring high‑quality communication across staff groups, coordinating complaint responses, and supporting the management of incidents and risks. You will also represent the Division at internal meetings, participate in bed management, and contribute to job planning with clinical colleagues, ensuring that services remain efficient, patient‑focused and aligned with Trust and national standards.
