Consultant Hepatologist

Consultant

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute hospital provider in the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS), which is a system of health and care partners working together for our local population.

Within Mid and South Essex there are 149 GP practices, operating from over 200 sites, forming 27 Primary Care Networks and one Ambulance Trust. There are also three main community and mental health service providers who work together through a community collaborative.

We collaborate with other valuable partners, including three Healthwatch organisations, nine voluntary and community sector organisations and three top tier local authorities, with seven district, borough and city councils, as well as our local universities.

Job overview

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Consultant in Hepatology to join our multidisciplinary Gastroenterology and Hepatology team within Basildon Hospital.

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and compassionate individual to contribute to a high-quality hepatology service, offering both inpatient and outpatient care across a wide range of liver diseases.

You will be responsible for developing the hepatology service, working closely with colleagues in gastroenterology, hepatobiliary surgery, radiology, oncology, and transplant centres, where applicable.

Play a pivotal role in the diagnosis, management, and follow-up of patients with acute and chronic liver conditions, including viral hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease, MASLD, cirrhosis, liver cancers, and autoimmune hepatitis.

Main duties of the job

Provide expert care for patients with a wide range of liver diseases including viral hepatitis, alcohol-related liver disease, MASLD/NASH, autoimmune liver disease, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma.

Lead specialist hepatology outpatient clinics and contribute to general gastroenterology clinics as required.

Perform and interpret specialist hepatology investigations and procedures, such as liver biopsies, paracentesis, and FibroScan assessments.

Support inpatient hepatology and gastroenterology care through regular ward rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings.

Provide advice and input for the management of liver-related emergencies, including acute liver failure and variceal bleeding.

The Consultant Hepatologist will be responsible for providing high-quality, patient-centred care in hepatology and general gastroenterology. The role encompasses outpatient clinics, inpatient ward reviews, specialist hepatology input, liver disease management (including cirrhosis, hepatitis B/C, MASLD, autoimmune liver disease, and alcohol-related liver disease), and close collaboration with the regional liver transplant units.

You will contribute to service development and clinical leadership, and support educational, research, and audit activities within the department.
