Clinical Research Nurse

Band 5

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute hospital provider in the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS), which is a system of health and care partners working together for our local population.

Within Mid and South Essex there are 149 GP practices, operating from over 200 sites, forming 27 Primary Care Networks and one Ambulance Trust. There are also three main community and mental health service providers who work together through a community collaborative.

We collaborate with other valuable partners, including three Healthwatch organisations, nine voluntary and community sector organisations and three top tier local authorities, with seven district, borough and city councils, as well as our local universities.

Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic Band 5 Research Nurse to join our dynamic and rapidly growing Research & Development Team at the Basildon site of Mid & South Essex NHS Foundation Trust.

You will play a key role in the delivery of high‑quality clinical research across a wide range of specialties, supporting studies that directly influence patient care, clinical practice, and future NHS innovation. With a diverse portfolio already active across the Trust and more studies opening all the time, this is a chance to step into a vibrant environment.

As part of the NIHR East of England Research Delivery Network, you will work alongside experienced Research Nurses, Clinical Research Practitioners, and wider multidisciplinary teams to ensure studies are delivered safely, effectively, and to the highest standards. You’ll gain exposure to cutting‑edge research, innovative treatments, and new models of care, all while developing specialist skills that can open the door to further progression within research nursing.

This role is ideal for a nurse who is passionate about improving patient outcomes, curious about research, and eager to contribute to an area of healthcare that is continually evolving. If you’re looking for a role that offers variety, professional development, and the chance to be part of something genuinely impactful, we’d love to hear from you.

Main duties of the job

Manage a personal caseload of research studies, ensuring safe, efficient delivery in line with study timelines.

Deliver high‑quality research interventions and procedures for patients across multiple specialties while maintaining excellent standards of care.

Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team—including clinicians, research nurses, CRPs, and wider hospital departments—to support smooth study delivery and participant pathways.

Ensure all activity complies with Good Clinical Practice, Trust policies, NIHR standards, and regulatory requirements.

Develop strong knowledge of study protocols to support accurate screening, recruitment, consent, data collection, and follow‑up.

Maintain high‑quality, timely documentation across electronic case report forms, study databases, and Trust systems, using a wide range of digital platforms with strong attention to detail.

Liaise effectively with internal and external teams such as pharmacy, radiology, laboratories, and study sponsors to coordinate procedures and resolve issues.

Prioritise patient safety by recognising and reporting adverse events, escalating concerns appropriately, and ensuring compassionate care.

Contribute to the wider R&D team by supporting study set‑up, recruitment strategies, and continuous improvement of research delivery across the Trust.

Working for our organisation

Our ambition is to deliver excellent local and specialist services, to improve the health and well-being of our patients, and provide a vibrant place for staff to develop, innovate and build careers.

We aim to make the most of our skills and experiences so we can become the best we can be. As one organisation we will recruit the finest and retain more specialist staff due to more employment opportunities across our Trust.
