Staff Podiatrist

NHS AfC: Band 6

Job overview

We are looking for a Staff Podiatrist to be a member of the Podiatric Surgery Team, providing a high standard of clinical care, perioperative assessment, contribution to development of surgical care plans, administration of advanced regional anaesthesia, including ankle and popliteal blocks.  Assist in the preparation and peri-operative care of surgical patients. 

Main duties of the job

Requesting diagnostic tests such as bloods and diagnostic imaging.  
Undertaking cardio-vascular and lower limb vascular assessment, using Doppler, ABPI, TBPI  and neurological assessment.  

To undertake patient care during surgery, this includes:  
a. Lead on collection and administration of audit including PASCOM 
b. Administering advanced local anaesthetic injections including digital, ankle and popliteal regional blocks.  
c. Prescribing/issuing appropriate peri-op medicines to optimise patients pre/intra/post surgery.  
d. Preparing patients for theatre with the nursing team.  
e. Where appropriate and opportunity allows to act as assistant in theatre. 
f. Applying/removing appropriate aircast, vacocast and plaster casts.  
g. Co-ordinating the discharge process from surgical units and to undertake post-operative patient care. 
h. Monitor post-operative progress.  
i. Wound management including debridement, washouts, re-suturing/gluing redressings. 
j. Cast, suture and wire removal.  
k. Advice regarding physical therapy techniques, scar and swelling 
management, and, overall rehabilitation.  
l. Monitoring for signs of post-operative complications including infection, deep vein thrombosis and complex regional pain syndrome and co-ordinating onward referral to acute services.  
m. Effecting the eventual discharge of the patient from the service with 
appropriate follow-on advice and realistic expectations. 

To take charge of all patient literature, PASCOM and stock control ordering.

  • 2 years post-registration in the NHS

  • Non Medical Prescribing or working towards
