Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute hospital provider in the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS), which is a system of health and care partners working together for our local population.

Job overview

The Specialist Cancer Centre for Urology in Essex has recently received £2 million in investment to enhance and expand its services. As part of this exciting development, we are growing our Urology Surgical Care Practitioner (SCP) Team.

We are now seeking a Lead Surgical Care Practitioner (SCP) to join our Urology team at Southend Hospital. This is a fixed-term role, ideal for an experienced, fully trained SCP ready to take on a leadership position within a forward-thinking, high-performing environment.

Main duties of the job

As Lead Surgical Care Practitioner, you will be an integral member of the Urology team, supporting the directorate in delivering key performance targets, with a strong focus on the quality and patient experience agenda.

You will:

  • Foster a culture of continuous quality improvement and professional development, ensuring that the delivery of patient care is consistently monitored, reviewed, and enhanced.

  • Lead on service development initiatives, supporting the implementation of change where needed to meet evolving patient and service demands.

  • Bring a high level of self-motivation, along with the passion, drive, adaptability, and resilience required to thrive in a dynamic healthcare environment.

  • Use your excellent communication and influencing skills to engage with multidisciplinary teams, facilitate collaboration, and promote best practices.

  • Ensure that quality and patient safety are at the forefront of all clinical and service activities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To be considered for this role, you will have successfully completed a clinical and theoretical programme at Master’s level in Surgical Care Practice, making you fully qualified to operate within the SCP scope of practice.

You will be expected to demonstrate:

  • Advanced communication skills, with the ability to coordinate care effectively and compassionately across a multidisciplinary team.

  • A flexible and collaborative approach, contributing to high-performing clinical environments.

  • A strong commitment to delivering an excellent patient experience, ensuring communication is accessible, empathetic, and patient-centred at all times.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Masters to have been completed
  • • Reg as RGN
  • • Experience of assisting in Robotic theatres
Desirable criteria
  • • Independent Diagnostic clinics evidence or shadowing to become independent other stuff besides theatre – ward rounds, outpatient clinics, MDT, Diagnostics
  • • Current ALS / ILS certification or willing to work towards
  • • Non-Medical Prescriber or willing to work towards

Skills

Essential criteria
  • • Ability to work autonomously
  • • Able to analyse data and produce reports
  • • Ability to communicate sensitive information to patients in a variety of settings
  • • Knowledge of current professional and NHS issues and policy
Desirable criteria
  • • Intermediate IT skills
