Senior Clinical Fellow in Urology (ST3+)
Senior Clinical Fellow (ST3+)
Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute hospital provider in the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS), which is a system of health and care partners working together for our local population.
Within Mid and South Essex there are 149 GP practices, operating from over 200 sites, forming 27 Primary Care Networks and one Ambulance Trust. There are also three main community and mental health service providers who work together through a community collaborative.
We collaborate with other valuable partners, including three Healthwatch organisations, nine voluntary and community sector organisations and three top tier local authorities, with seven district, borough and city councils, as well as our local universities.
Job overview
We are looking to expand our Urology Services in Mid and South Essex Foundation Trust (MSE) to meet our demand and GIRFT recommendations. Our recent GIRFT review shows that MSE has one of the highest number of urology referrals in the country.
The Urology departments across the MSE (Chelmsford, Basildon and Southend) have merged into one clinical directorship. As a consequence we are reconfiguring clinical services and will be providing on call services at the Chelmsford and Southend sites. We are looking to expand our team to a compliant 1:10 on call rota at the Chelmsford site. Consultants and registrars will work to a Consultant/Registrar of the week model so that whilst on call they will be free of elective duties. Ambulatory and same day emergency care facilities have been developed and there will be dedicated emergency operating lists allowing us to treat emergency ureteric stones with primary ureteroscopy where appropriate.
Southend Hospital is a Specialist Cancer Centre, where robotic cystectomy and prostatectomy are carried out, as well as some of the more complex nephrectomies. There is also a robot at the Broomfield for upper tract urology cases (nephrectomy, pyeloplasty and adrenalectomy). The complex stone services; flexible ureteroscopies and PCNLs are carried out at both Basildon and Broomfield. New technology like Urolift, REZUME and bipolar resection are now available for patient with BOO requiring surgery.
Roles can be offered across MSE
Main duties of the job
Applications are invited for the position of Urology Trust Doctor to support both the elective and non-elective urology work at Urology. The successful applicants will be required to work primarily at one of the Basildon or Broomfield sites, he or she will be expected to participate at the on call rota based at Broomfield when the merge between the two sites takes place. We have developed a 1:10 compliant on call rota for registrar of the week.
This is a unique opportunity for a person who is enthusiastic, motivated and looking for a career in Urology and would like to progress their career through experience. We have a very busy Urology Department and the person appointed will be fortunate to have an unopposed opportunity to enhance their experience and training in Urology. Although this is not a formal training post there is no trainee SpR in the Department thus allowing the appointee to have an opportunity to advance their career through the alternative route. We have successfully supported previous middle grade doctors through the national selection process and FRCS (Urol) examinations. We have a weekly teaching session and journal club to which you will be expected to contribute.
