Job overview
The Essex and Suffolk Elective Orthopaedic Centre at Colchester Hospital will be one of the largest centres of its kind in Europe. Delivering high volume and low complexity cases locally for the people we serve across our region.
You will be required to carry out a wide range of duties to support the elective Orthopaedic team in the delivery of a high quality care and effective discharge planning. The emphasis for the role is to manage and direct under supervision of a registered nurse the gathering of accurate and detailed information to support discharge plans over a seven day period. You will need to communicate with patients about discharge plans as well as the ward/MDT staff.
The Dame Clare Marx Building that will house our elective orthopaedic centre (ESEOC) opens in 2024 with a focus on elective orthopaedic surgery and day cases. The centre will have eight laminar flow theatres, three wards, recovery facilities, and support services including radiology and EBME.

Main duties of the job
- To maintain up-to-date knowledge of elective Orthopaedic discharge pathways including the DOH Hospital Discharge policy and to be a point of reference within the department for other members of the MDT regarding discharge.
- To be an advocate for the patient and their family in order to promote a safe and timely discharge , empowering patients to make decisions about their own care and encourage them to exercise their rights and choices, signposting them to relevant community support and escalating any risks to registered clinicians
- To manage and prioritise own case load to ensure patients discharge is appropriate to needs and is completed in a timely manner
- To work as part of the integrated discharge team to support discharge planning and system flow within a seven-day service-optimising patient’s independence

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- GCSE grade 5/C or equivalent in English and Maths
- Relevant NVQ level 3 or equivalent apprenticeship or other qualification.
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of Previous further study
Experience
Essential criteria
- Working in a busy working environment as part of a large team
- Proven ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion at all times when dealing with highly sensitive information
- Ability to prioritise an unpredictable work load and work to time scales in a fast pace environment without losing attention to detail
- Evidence of ability to take a lead in day to day activities
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience of a co-ordinator role
- Previous experience in interagency and customer liaison.
- Previous experience in a healthcare environment
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Understanding of the DOH Hospital discharge Policy – including discharge pathways / criteria to reside
- Knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act and implications for discharge
- Use of Microsoft office including excel
Desirable criteria
- Understanding of medical terminology
Applicant requirements
The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
