Job overview

Are you an inspirational leader ready to drive excellence in Urgent and Emergency Care?

We have an exceptional opportunity to join the ESNEFT Medicine & Community North East Essex (MACNEE) Division as the General Manager for the Urgent & Emergency Care Clinical Delivery Group (CDG) based at Colchester Hospital.

In this pivotal senior leadership role, you will oversee a comprehensive portfolio including the Colchester Emergency Department (ED), Urgent Treatment Centres (Colchester & Clacton), Harwich Minor Injuries Unit (MIU), Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), Emergency Assessment Unit (EAU), Acute Frailty services (including the Frailty Assessment Unit), OPAT, and IRAS teams

At ESNEFT we are committed to being a national leader in "front door" care. We have made significant investments in our infrastructure and most importantly, our people. We are looking for a proactive leader with a "can-do" attitude to inspire our teams and drive the delivery of national performance standards, ensuring our Emergency Department remains dedicated to life and limb emergencies while optimising all alternative pathways.

Key Highlights

  • Lead a large complex CDG with significant investment and a brand-new Urgent Treatment Centre in Clacton-on-Sea, 24/7 SDEC and an expanding Frailty offer (including a Frailty Assessment Unit).
  • Drive the UEC Improvement Plan to enhance 4-hour, 12-hour, and HO45 performance metrics.
  • Be at the forefront of system-wide initiatives to improve patient flow and outcomes

Main duties of the job

  • Operational Leadership: Ensure the delivery of high-quality, safe, and effective U&EC services, consistently achieving national performance standards (4hr, 12hr, HO45).
  • Performance Management: Lead the development, implementation, and review of robust performance management systems to drive continuous improvement across the CDG.
  • Strategic Collaboration: Work closely with Site Directors, Divisional Directors, Associate Directors, and Clinical Leads to develop and implement service delivery and improvement plans.
  • Financial Oversight: Establish and maintain rigorous financial controls, ensuring the CDG operates within budget and delivers value for money.
  • Workforce Management: Provide strong leadership to a large multi-disciplinary team, fostering a positive culture where staff feel valued, supported, and empowered to excel.
  • System Working: Foster exceptional working relationships internally across divisions and externally with system partners to ensure seamless patient flow and effective utilisation of all pathways.

Working for our organisation

We are one of the largest NHS organisations in England, employing more than 12,000 staff.

We pride ourselves on supporting our staff. We offer a wide range of training and development opportunities, as well as flexible working options.

Along with supporting you to achieve your career goals we offer a generous pension scheme, unsocial hours payments (where applicable), 27 days annual leave on commencement (pro rata) and access to a range of NHS discounts. Our Staff Health and Wellbeing programme offer a variety of services.

Our philosophy is that Time Matters to everyone. Across the Trust, we concentrate on improving the things we do and removing those which cause time delays for our staff and patients.

We are investing in our commitment to Time Matters with a partnership with leading electronic patient record (EPR) supplier Epic. This digital transformation will bring what’s widely regarded as the world’s best EPR system to ESNEFT, transforming life in hospital for staff and patients.
