Job overview
We are inviting applicants to apply for the Cornea Clinical Fellow post in Ophthalmology at Colchester Hospital.
This is a full-time clinical and surgical fellowship post for the period of one year (with the possibility to extend for another year), offering specific training in aspects of Corneal & Anterior Segment , Refractive & Glaucoma Surgery.
This is a 12 month fixed term post in the first instance to start August 2026.
Main duties of the job
The post will offer hands on clinical and surgical experience in a broad range of anterior segment surgery. The postholder with gain exposure to the range of specialist procedures provided by the Anterior Segment Consultant.
The post-holder may be expected to perform independent cataract surgical lists, and cross cover. The successful applicant will be expected to be able to perform independent surgery, although specific training will be offered in complex cataract surgery, and high volume cataract surgery.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Duties will include:
- Management of urgent Anterior segment cases & Anterior segment emergency clinic
- Cross cover of vacant cataract lists
- Supervision of junior medical staff in the Service
- There is a general on-call commitment.
Person specification
Essential
Essential criteria
- Full GMC registration with a license to practice
- FRCOphth OR MRCOphth OR equivalent
- Experience in Cataract Surgery
- Broad knowledge of General Ophthalmology inc Anterior segment
- Good Clinical Judgement
- Be near to or completed Higher Specialist Training in Ophthalmology
- Potential to cope with stressful situations & undertake responsibility
- Team player
- Good communication & organisational skills
Desirable criteria
- Higher Qualification
- Anterior Segment Clinical / Surgical Experience
- Use of Database Systems and Electronic Patient Records (i.e. Medisoft)
- Demonstrated commitment to specialise in Glaucoma via Teaching & Audit
