Job overview
An outstanding opportunity has arisen for a Senior Children's Nurse who is dynamic and high performing to join the senior management team as Matron for Children's Services based at Colchester hospital.
You will provide managerial, professional and clinical leadership to nurses and support staff working within the children's service ensuring the professional contributions of these staff is maximised to achieve the Trusts objectives and strategic goals in accordance with user needs, and national and local professional standards.
You will work well within the multi-disciplinary team, influencing and leading others in practice, in the delivery of clinical outcomes and support the General Manager to drive high standards of quality care and patient experience.
Working alongside the Children’s management team you will oversee a diverse portfolio including inpatient services, Children’s elective care, assessment unit and out patients.
Main duties of the job
The Matron is responsible and accountable for implementation of robust systems and processes that ensure there is a continuing improvement in the quality of the service provided to patients, safety to staff and visitors to the Trust premises, who may be affected by the work of the Trust.
They are also responsible and accountable to the Trust:
- For the delivery of the Clinical Specialty Clinical Governance agenda working within the Trust framework of Clinical Governance ensuring nursing and associated clinical services deliver quality, performance and operational objectives.
- For the continuous improvement of clinical productivity, patient safety and experience for all patients and carers
- Accountable for the delivery and monitoring of robust infection control measures through relentless vigilance by ensuring delivery of all aspects of the Infection Control Strategy
- For management of the nursing and clinical service, ensuring the delivery of high quality, timely care

Experience
Essential criteria
- Proven experience at senior nurse level with recent experience as Band 7
- Current health policy and its impact on the management and development of acute health services
- Experience of effective budgetary management
- Significant experience of effective staff management
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of effective working relationships both inside and outside the organisation
- Leadership Facilitator
- Experience of leading strategic/cross Trust changes
Skills & knowledge
Essential criteria
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to liaise & negotiate
- Proven ability to lead teams effectively, exercising sound judgement
- Ability to think & plan strategically, tactically & creatively and prioritise work programmes
- IT literate
Desirable criteria
- Carried out clinical changes in light of changing evidence base
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Masters Degree in relation to health management Or equivalent experience
- Professional nursing qualification
- Evidence of academic pathway equivalent to Degree in Nursing or Health Related study
Desirable criteria
- Management Leadership Qualification, which has been tested in a management post
