EPUT is seeking to appoint a compassionate and committed Specialty Doctor in Addiction to join the Essex Specialist Treatment and Recover Services (STaRS).  The post holder will provide consistent, high quality Medical care for individuals with substance use disorders. This is an excellent opportunity for a doctor with an interest in addiction psychiatry to work in a dynamic and supportive environment.

Main duties of the job

Essex STARS are commissioned by the Public Health England via the Essex County to provide a drug treatment system that is integrated and configured to address the locally identified needs of the population it serves. We work alongside other commissioned non-statutory providers of psychosocial interventions encompassing community and criminal justice settings.

 

Working as part of a drug treatment partnership, we work together to initiate recovery-focused activities early and give service users access to a range of recovery support interventions and services such as opiate replacement treatment, community alcohol detoxification, funding for inpatient alcohol detoxification and rehabilitation as family and parenting support and addressing employment and housing difficulties.

 

We provide assessment and therapeutic intervention to the local population with dependence use of heroin and other opioids. We also provide specialist support to primary and secondary care practitioners.

 

You should be eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold Section 12 (2) approval under the Mental Health Act 1983. You will also need to provide evidence of achievement of ST1/CT1 competences in psychiatry at time of application and likelihood of achieving CT2 competences in psychiatry by the start date of the post.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1.   Engaging with people who have substance misuse problems and providing them with general healthcare and general mental health assessments and contribute to the development of individual care plans.

2.   Working alongside the team consultant, you will manage co-morbid severe and enduring mental illness in the community in liaison with community mental health teams care coordinators and local GPs.

3.   You will provide specialist prescribing assessments to opiate and alcohol dependent clients. Initiate appropriate prescribing regimes to clients in line with national, and local guidance.

4.   You will support the non-medical prescribers and nursing team to safely titrate controlled drugs treatment regime to patients with Trust and NICE clinical guidelines.

5.   Working closely with other relevant professionals and organizations including other non-statutory addiction services, adult psychiatric services, general practitioners, medical colleagues, Social Services and Prison Services

6.   While primarily responsible for delivering a quality clinical service, the SAS psychiatrist is also expected to be actively involved in the MDT working of the team, being involved with the team manager in helping to steer the service in line with the strategic direction of the organisation.

Essential criteria
  • Clinical judgement: experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk. Knows when to seek help, able to prioritise clinical need.
  • Relevant specialty clinical knowledge: capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge relevant to the job and specialty
  • Practical skills: shows aptitude for practical skills, required in the job.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in different clinical settings required in the job
  • Experience in Addictions/substance misuse.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working within Adult Psychiatry

  • Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies by time of appointment in line with GMC standards in Good Medical
