Job overview
Opportunities have arisen for Band 5 REGISTERED MENTAL HEALTH NURSES on our Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit at The St Aubyn Centre in Colchester. These vacancies have arisen due to The Trust increasing our staffing establishment.
Larkwood Ward is a 10 bedded PICU and we care for young people aged 13 to 18 who are experiencing severe mental health problems.
We work with young people who cannot be safely cared for in the community or on General Adolescent Units. They may be experiencing Psychosis, Depression, Suicidal Ideation and Self Harm.
The unit is very well resourced and you will be working as part of an extensive MDT consisting of Family Therapists, Psychologists, Art and Drama Therapists, Psychotherapist's, Ward Doctors and Consultant Psychiatrists.
There are also numerous training opportunities to further your career.
We are happy to support newly qualified staff through their preceptorship. Newly qualified Mental Health Nurses are greatly encouraged to apply for this position.
Main duties of the job
- Working and supporting young people aged 13 to 18 as part of the MDT team.
- Key working young people.
- Care planning in collaboration with your key child.
- Writing reports and attending Ward Reviews.
- Attending CPA's.
- Communicating with families.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To be responsible along with other nursing staff for patient assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation all care aspects of individual care planning.
- Attending to the physical and psychological needs of the patients under the care of the nursing team.
- Act as key worker for a designated group of young people.
- Delivery of effective individualised care by supervising staff in the assessment of patient’s condition. Ensure that accurate and objective information is recorded and signed by the appropriate member of staff.
- Establish therapeutic relationships with individual clients, relatives and carers are maintained by the nursing team. Write and contribute towards the formulation of care plans.
- Ensure effective and confidential communication at all times maintaining strict confidentiality with regard to any information concerning patients and colleagues.
- Demonstrate an awareness of the needs of carers of patients with mental health problems.
- To fully comply with the requirements of the NMC and upkeep of registration. · Be aware of the Mental Health Act 1983 and be aware of clients detained under section of the Mental Health Act 1983 in the clinical area.
- Supervise the formulation of plans for the patient’s discharge and transfer from the clinical areas in line with Care Programme Approach, Children’s Act 2004 and discharge policy.
- Observe any changes in a patient’s physical condition or mental state and document in an appropriate manner.
- Assist patients towards self-care and independence.
- Understand the need for personal responsibility in relation to using the correct techniques for moving and handling patients.
- Act in a relaxed manner, thereby contributing to the creation and maintenance of a calm and relaxed atmosphere/environment.
- Establish positive professional and appropriate relationships with patients adopting a non-judgemental approach. Always be prepared to listen and treat each patient with respect and courtesy; valuing them as individuals.
