Job overview

  •         The post holder will manage the operational Clinical Coding service on the PAH site.
  •         Undertake long term planning for the service to ensure that departmental objectives are achieved in accordance to requirements set nationally and by the Trust, in conjunction with the Head of clinical Coding.
  •         Plan, prepare and manage training on and audit of clinically coded data promoting and increasing clinical involvement in the coding process.
  •         Serve as the Trust internal authority on all matters relating to clinical coding.
  •         Responsible for the proper operation of clinical coding information systems.
  •         Play an active role in wider data quality improvements that support the delivery of a high quality Clinical Coding Service

Main duties of the job

•            To deliver robust management practices and systems, to support the Clinical Coding Department in its strategic objectives.
•            To be responsible for the delivery of strict local, national and contractual deadlines for the assignment of clinical codes using classifications ICD-10 and OPCS-4, ensuring accurate and timely reimbursement for each patient treated within the Trust.
•            To be responsible for ensuring the accuracy and completeness of clinical coding through improved sources of information, engaging clinicians, clinical boards and relevant departments, such as IT and Finance, in the process.
•            To be responsible for measuring and reporting coding productivity both departmentally and by individual Coder, to the head of Clinical Coding and Clinical Coders.
•            The post holder will be accountable for the training and mentoring of all new clinical coders, through provision of training, and mentoring.
•            The post holder will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of a comprehensive clinical coder training and professional development program, incorporating both internal and external courses.

Essential criteria
  • NCCQ
  • Masters qualification or equivalent demonstrable management experience

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of Clinical coding Audit
  • Experience of using Patient Administration systems and encoding software
  • Demonstrable in –depth Specialist Clinical Coding experience across a wide range of Specialities, in an Acute Trust setting

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of attendance to a Clinical Coding refresher course, within the last 2 years
  • Comprehensive knowledge of coding rules and Classifications

Qualities

Essential criteria
  • Flexible approach to work and the ability to prioritise workload
