We are offering an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, self-motivated dietitian to join our team working as a Macmillan dietitian

You will be a key player within the oncology dietetic team.  This post will cover both acute & community specialist oncology services across Ipswich Hospital & East Suffolk.

We are looking for someone who is passionate about delivering a quality, evidence-based service, who relishes working in a busy setting and are a strong team player. We are seeking someone with excellent team working skills with both Dietetics colleagues and the wider MDT, as well as an ability to work independently & flexibly. 

You will benefit from being part of a Multi- disciplinary team and be responsible for the overseeing the dietetic care of patients with head and neck cancer. 

You will work in a number of settings including the oncology ward, radiotherapy and outpatient clinics at Ipswich Hospital. 

You will join an established integrated inpatient (Ipswich Hospital), outpatient and community dietetic service that incorporates a range of clinical specialisms including renal, paediatrics, gastroenterology and a nutrition team.

This affords many opportunities to develop and learn new skills, with a commitment from the service to support your continuing professional development. The Dietetic Team consists of 26 Dietitians with 8 Dietetic Support Staff providing a service to both acute and community settings with secretarial and administrative staff who support us.

Main duties of the job

  • To be a lead dietitian responsible for the delivery of a high quality, evidence-based dietetic care to a complex needs within the dietetic oncology service.
  • To be responsible for the dietetic management of patients with head and neck cancer, providing advice for pre-treatment, nutrition support including home enteral tube feeding and rehabilitation.
  • To manage a caseload of home enteral tube feed oncology patients
  • To supervise staff including a band 3 dietetic technician in oncology and overseeing nutritional screening on the oncology day unit.
  • Provide education and training for professional colleagues in all aspects of nutrition across East Suffolk, health and social care agencies.
  • To contribute to the dietetic service providing a source of expertise to patients, carers, medical practitioners, allied health professionals, and social care professionals as part of the multidisciplinary team.
  • To provide specialist input into the planning, development and evaluation of dietetic services within oncology, holding responsibility for defined projects.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This affords many opportunities to develop and learn new skills, with a commitment from the service to support your continuing professional development. The Dietetic Team consists of 26 Dietitians with 8 Dietetic Support Staff providing a service to both acute and community settings with secretarial and administrative staff who support us.

You will have access to regular supervision and have opportunities to undertake continuing professional development through work shadowing, tutorials and courses as identified by your training needs and objectives.

We are a well- recognised department for student training in partnership with the University of Hertfordshire, and you will have an active role in supporting this programme and we currently had an apprentice Dietitians within the department. The trust is also committed with AHP research and has recently gained resource to support this within the trust.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Degree / Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics
  • • Registration with Health Professions Council
  • • Member of British Dietetic Association
Desirable criteria
  • • Member of Special Interest Group
  • • Leadership qualifications e.g. LEO and Supervisory Skills
  • • Evidence of other post registration education and training e.g. PENG, counselling skills
  • • Ability to travel between locations

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Significant post-registration experience in a range of clinical areas, including supporting patients on enteral tube feeds.
  • • Experience of working with oncology patients
  • • Experience of working with inpatients and outpatients
  • • Portfolio of evidence of CPD
Desirable criteria
  • • Portfolio of evidence of CPD

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • Broad up to date knowledge and practical application of clinical dietetics
  • • Knowledge and understanding of BDA professional standards
  • • Good knowledge of the MUST tool and food first principles.
  • • Experience of supporting patients with enteral feeding
  • • Awareness of current issues in: Nutrition and Dietetics, The NHS and Department of Health, The Health and social care agenda
  • • Intermediate IT skills e.g. keyboard skills, PowerPoint
Desirable criteria
  • • Understanding of current initiatives regarding ONS prescribing
  • • Awareness of current oncology treatments and their potential impact on nutritional needs
  • • Clinical supervisory skills
