Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute hospital provider in the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS), which is a system of health and care partners working together for our local population.

This is a lovely and rewarding role for someone who enjoys working with babies and supporting families. As a Newborn Hearing Screener, you’ll be part of the maternity team, carrying out hearing checks to help identify any potential hearing issues early on. You’ll talk with parents, explain the process clearly, gain consent, and make sure results are recorded accurately.
The role needs someone who’s calm, caring, and pays attention to detail. You’ll work on the postnatal ward and in outpatient clinics, supported by a friendly team that’s dedicated to giving babies the best start and families a positive experience.
Main duties of the job

You’ll carry out hearing checks for newborns on the postnatal ward, neonatal unit, and in outpatient clinics, following national standards and local guidelines. You’ll talk with parents, explain the screening process clearly, gain consent, and record results accurately and sensitively.
Working closely with the maternity and audiology teams, you’ll help make sure every baby is screened within the national timeframe. Above all, you’ll bring a calm, kind, and reassuring presence to families at a very special time in their lives.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Carry out newborn hearing screening on the postnatal ward, neonatal unit, and in outpatient clinics, helping to identify potential hearing concerns early so babies can get the right support from the start.

Greet families warmly and explain the screening process clearly, making sure parents understand what will happen and feel comfortable giving their consent.

Handle babies gently and safely, ensuring they are calm, comfortable, and secure throughout the screening.

Record results accurately using the Smart4Hearing system, keeping information confidential and ensuring all data is entered correctly and on time.

Arrange and follow up re-screening appointments for babies who need them, ensuring every child is seen within the required timeframe.

Work closely with the maternity, neonatal, and audiology teams to make sure all eligible babies are screened before discharge or invited back for follow-up.
