Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Head, Neck and Thyroid Cancer Oncology Support Worker for ESNEFT working at Colchester hospital with scope to work on occasions from home.

This role involves working within a supportive team environment with the ability to make a real difference to patients with cancer and their families.

You should be confident with effective communication skills as you will be supporting patients emotionally and practically, ensuring that they have access to information and support designed to enhance a personalised care experience.

Duties will involve supporting the initiation and running of the Thyroid PCFU programme and general administration duties with oversight of the Head and Neck Clinical Nurse Specialists.

IT and literacy skills are essential as you will be recording confidential information on a range of computer databases.

Main duties of the job

Purpose of Role:

  • To work as an integral part of the Head and Neck/Thyroid team and as coordinator for the Patient Centred Follow Up (PCFU) service.
  • To provide an administrative service to the Head and Neck CNS team & wider MDT
  • To provide a communication link between hospital, patients and GPs 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Patient Centred Follow Up Service
  • Book/amend/reconcile appointments using Microsoft Outlook calendar and trust systems, liaising with patients as required.
  • Maintain the Somerset Remote Monitoring System to include attendance and outcomes of PCFU appointments, ensuring that any patient who does not attend the appointment is followed up.
  • Monitor investigations via hospital systems to ensure that results when appropriate are communicated to the patient in a timely manner.
  • Identify any patient who requires follow up investigations to ensure they are managed according to Thyroid PCFU protocols.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Currently employed in a relevant health care or social care background, i.e. Health Care Assistant or equivalent, Social care, OT and/or Macmillan services
  • Minimum experience at Band 3
  • Ability to work to clear protocols/guidelines within role boundaries
  • Flexible approach to working hours/duties
Desirable criteria
  • NHS Experience

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GCSE or ‘O’ level Maths & English grade C or above or Level 2 Adult Literacy & Numeracy qualification or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to study to level 3 or equivalent (‘A’ level, advanced diploma, AS level, level 3 NVQ, level 3 BTEC, national award
  • NVQ4 Foundation Degree/Post Graduate Diploma

Knowledge
